Non-campers can pay a day use fee and enjoy a picnic along the bluff. For special events, two large ramadas are available for reservations. Whether you’re daytripping or camping, come prepared because there is no camp store or concession.
Natural beauty is in abundance on this 1.5-mile stretch of beach. This small park provides views of the Santa Cruz Mountains and the hills of the Monterey Peninsula. Playing on the beach is a must, but the water has rip currents and deep offshore drop-offs. Surfing is only recommended for the most experienced. Those with a fishing license can fish for surf perch, sardines and striped bass.
The best time to visit Sunset State Beach is during the summer months when the weather is warm and the days are long. However, the beach's beauty can be enjoyed year-round, with fewer crowds in the off-season. Winter months may bring cooler temperatures and the chance of rain, so prepare accordingly.
