Each campsite is simply carved out of the grass by our mowing team. Still pretty private and very quiet!
Great egrets may still be on their nests or traveling in the evening sky over your camp
The Navy's oldest cemetery in the Pacific is in our Preserve. Guided tours are given by our Cemetery docent, Saturday, August 11 at 12noon and 1:00pm

The yurt sits on top of the concrete ruins of a house (a duplex home to two Navy civilian families for more than 45 years, Myrna tells us.)
Perfect place for morning coffee inside the yurt.

I was shocked that three beds could fit in here comfortably, but I was proven wrong (one of many times).
The outside canvas (and floor) of the yurt is repurposed billboard!
Not many places can comfortably sleep our family of 5 and we were surprised how much room there was in this small yurt
A short hike up the road, and towards the other sites can lead to some great sunrise views of the surrounding area.

Park your car camper, van or small trailer in front of our 1934 bomb storage magazine. There's a restroom right there and a nice quiet spot to hang out.
We've got a little coffee cart set up near the visitor center. It's not open all the time. We're too busy running the Preserve as all volunteer team, but definitely late mornings, afternoons and evenings...
Views of 7 Bay Area counties and the San Pablo Bay, Mt. Tam, Mt Diablo, the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Wow!
Our visitor center with its bright yellow striped tent and campfire is where the food prep area is, a nice propane grill, a camp stove. Cozy and comfy place to hang out inside or out.
Did we mention that the place is super quirky with all sorts of weird looking buildings with somewhat unknown uses in the former ammunition depot across the fence.

View of the 7 counties from the trail up to the ghost ship.
It's a lovely quiet and quirky spot...our Mare Island Preserve. It's located on the southern end of Mare Island on the Navy's oldest Ammo Depot in the Pacific (160 this year). We've got wide open spaces and great hiking.
campin out in the field
our camp spots are simple mowed areas along an old railroad track minus the tracks, but close to the visitor center, campfire, cooking and portable restrooms.
