This 450 acre property is on ancient Chumash sacred land. Over the past few hundred years there was significant disturbance to the ecosystem. Deforestation was substantial in the area to supply fuel for smelting operations, and decades of cattle ranching degraded the fragile riparian zone. Today it is surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest, and owned by the educational non-profit Quail Springs Permaculture (you can find us online). Quail Springs acquired the land more than a decade ago in order to conserve the land and become a site for youth and adult wilderness skills training. Over the years, the site has become a renowned permaculture farm - offering courses in permaculture design, wilderness skills, natural building, and land restoration. The spring was barely flowing when Quail Springs acquired the land, and today you will find that the riparian zone is thriving and the creek flows quite a ways down the canyon.
