Quail Ridge RV Park & Campground

30 sites ¡ RVs, Tents17 acres ¡ Strawberry Valley, CA
Quail Ridge RV Park and Campground has almost 17 acres nestled in the Plumas National Forest. We do NOT have direct water access. We are surrounded by seven lakes, with Sly Creek and Lost Lake Reservoirs being the closest (about 3 mi. north of us), two major rivers and the 3rd largest waterfall in California (trail is currently closed until 3/24). Outdoor activities abound with fishing, swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking trails and mountain biking trails. You can also explore the local rivers and try your luck at gold panning. Our park is primarily divided into three areas: (1) seven RV sites for weekend RV's that have full hook-ups (no pull through sites); (2) an area in the middle of the park where permanent residents live; and (3) an area for our tent campers on the opposite side of the park. Please note that EACH TENT requires its own separate reservation. We have eight magical, secluded and private tent spaces in the forest for campers without children and up to 4 people. If you have more than 4 people, children, or multiple tents, you will stay in our group/family area, which is a large open flat area with a mixture of trees and open space. We have two complimentary propane grills, tables and chairs, picnic tables, dish washing area and clean porta potty that are available for anyone to use in this area. Sorry, but due to the always present fire danger, no cooking or fires are allowed in the Small Tent sites. You may use your own propane or charcoal grill in the family/large tent area, or you may use our complimentary grills. We have clean laundry and showers and flush toilets on the other side of the park approximately 250' away from the tent sites. There is one shower and one flush toilet for men and women that are handicapped accessible. Showers cost $1 for 12 minutes of hot water. Cell phone service is spotty. AT&T/Cricket and sometimes Verizon work the best. There is a cell phone signal booster located in the office that can boost your AT&T/Cricket signal so you can probably use your phone (but no guarantees). We also have free Wi-Fi around the office area. Quail Ridge RV Park is very pet friendly. However, we cannot accept aggressive breed dogs, or Pit-Bull mixed dogs (sorry, but our insurance company restricts these breeds). Please identify the dog breed when you are making a reservation. Local residents and kids were treated to free train rides and special events for many years. There is a natural spring with a small creek that supplies the ponds with fresh water year around. The best camping near Plumas National Forest guide

Overview

About

Encompassing more than a million acres of protected land in the northern Sierra Nevada range, Plumas National Forest offers an incredible diversity of outdoor activities, from summer rock climbing, hiking, camping, and fishing to winter snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and skiing. It's also a great place for long, scenic drives, and if you have a vehicle with 4WD, it's worth taking a jaunt through the 150-mile-long Plumas Backcountry Discovery Trail, which showcases some of the most remote areas in the forest. The forest has three ranger districts, each with dozens of publicly owned campgrounds, and many of the area's lower-elevation campgrounds are open throughout the year.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for boaters: You can launch your boat right into the lake at Frenchman Campground.
  • Best for anglers: At an elevation of 6,479 ft., the popular Lone Rock Campground offers easy access to the waters of Antelope Lake.
  • Best for last-minute tent campers: Black Rock Walk-in Tent Campground has 20 walk-in tent sites available on a first-come, first-served basis plus a massive parking lot where RV owners can park their vehicles.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve a campsite up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov or by calling the Forest Service.
  2. Some campsites must be reserved at least three days in advance.
  3. Many campgrounds release some or all campsites on a first-come, first-served basis.
  4. Campgrounds with tent and RV camping are available in all three ranger districts, but dispersed camping (with a permit) is only an option in parts of the Beckwourth Ranger District.
  5. If you can’t find a campsite, check with the nearest ranger station about last-minute availability or look into staying at a  private campground or Hipcamp instead.

When to go

Plumas National Forest is at its busiest in the warm summer months, especially in July and August when children are out of school for the season. The autumn shoulder season is also pleasant, but many areas close after the first snowfall, which can happen as early as October. Some areas, such as the Frenchman Recreation Area, stay open year-round, attracting fans of ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

Know before you go

  • Phone service can be spotty in parts of the forest, so make sure to download offline maps before you set out.
  • Bears are active in much of the forest, and some campgrounds require campers to store all food, toiletries, trash, and cookware in bear lockers (where available) or inside their vehicles.
  • Fire restrictions are common in this area, and can change at short notice. Check the Plumas National Forest website for up-to-date details.
  • If you plan to build a fire or use a barbecue or portable stove, during permitted times, you'll need to first obtain a campfire permit.
