The land is part of Northern California rural history, starting with several thousand years of native American history, genocide, logging, railroads, and the Wild West. Laytonville was a logging town with a local mill. The land itself was logged sometime around the turn of the century and regenerated itself with an abundance of mixed conifers, oak, madrone, and manzanitta. Our location is "semi-rural" if you're from the area, but "rural" if you live in the city! We have ten acres with minor trails, neighbors with fences and gates, and we are walking distance to town. The vibe on the land is mellow and quiet. You can hear some of the neighbors, some traffic, but mainly you'll hear crows, ravens, woodpeckers, hawks, and migrating birds. There are deer and occasional bobcats and fox. I bought the land in 2004 with the intention of creating a green, sustainable neighborhood; hence an "ecovillage." We host workshops on sustainability, land-use planning, solar, etc. There are many "green" features here at the Laytonville Ecovillage and many more on the way!
