Oak Ring Ridge

1 site ¡ Lodging60 acres ¡ Macdoel, CA
We originally purchased the 20 acres of untouched land and built our cabin, the "Snug Shack," as a getaway from the city. Fast forward a few years, and 40 acres next door with an abandoned house on the canyon ridge went up for sale. We decided to purchase it and start a homestead there. That 40 acres where we now live was badly abused, and we have been in the process of cleaning up and restoring it. Fortunate for you, the land surrounding the Snug Shack was never abused and is still pristine and beautiful. By camping at the Snug Shack, you help support us in our mission to restore this beautiful place. We named our homestead after the rings of small oak trees that grow here on the ridge.: "Oak Ring Ridge." You can learn more about our project in progress at our website and instagram account: @oak_ring_ridge

We have 10 alpaca along with mini-donkeys and horses, a mini-mule, assorted cats and dogs, Icelandic sheep, and Kune Kune pigs. This is quite a place: There are the sounds - the odd mutterings of the alpaca, the constant hooting of doves, the off and on braying of donkeys. There are the sights of the country life that surrounds us, the cattle and sheep of the ranch behind us, and the horses grazing in the meadow across the road. And a final and impossible to miss addition to the sights and sounds for you to take home - the solitary 14,179 foot Mount Shasta presiding calmly over its domain.

The best camping near Lava Beds National Monument guide

Overview

About

There's no other park like this one. With more than 700 caves and a handful of craters, this is easily a natural wonder! There are amazing lava tube caves like the glowing gold walls of the Golden Dome to see. There's also the dangling icicles of the Skull Cave. But that's just the beginning.

It's like the National Park Service was kind enough to offer up a whole crash course in Geology 101. There are textbook examples of all kinds of earth treasures here. You'll come across creations like cinder cones, pit craters, volcanic fields. and more.

When you're done admiring the geology, take in some culture at Petroglyph Point. It's one of the largest panels of Native American rock art in the United States. The Modoc National Forest gets its name from the Modoc people that took refuge in the Captain Jack Stronghold cave here. Whatever you end up doing, you'll be sure to lav-a this national monument!

When to go

The ideal time to visit Lava Beds National Monument is during spring and fall when the weather is mild, making exploration comfortable. Summer brings high temperatures, which can limit daytime activities, while winter may present snowy conditions, offering a stark yet beautiful contrast to the park's usual arid climate.

Know before you go

  • Check the latest park alerts and safety information before your visit.
  • Visit the visitor center for important caving safety guidelines and permits.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear for exploring the rugged terrain.
  • Be mindful of park laws and policies to protect the natural and historical features.
