The best camping near Castle Crags State Park guide

Overview

About

These sky-scraping spires huddle together and create the gargantuan rampart that is the centerpiece of this park.

Of course, when you have this much quality rock, you’re bound to attract some climbers. Located just south of Dunsmuir, this crag is a welcome stop if you’re heading up or down I-5. Most of the climbing here is trad, although there are some sport routes at the Pin Cushion Wall. Be prepared for a long approach. It’s 1.5 hours from the car and all uphill.

The hiking here is tough and very steep but oh so worth it. We recommend the Castle Dome Trail. The first two-thirds are pretty unremarkable but once you hit the granite it all pays off. This trail is the easiest way to get up close and personal with the park’s namesake. Plus, there are stunning views of nearby Mount Shasta. If you want the views without all the huffing and puffing, hit up the quarter-mile paved trail to the Vista Point.

Camping can be had in one 76 developed campsites in the park. There are fire rings, food lockers, and picnic tables in each site. Flush toilets and showers are available in the campground.

Notable campgrounds

  • Family Campsites: Nestled amid the park's natural beauty, these sites offer a perfect family getaway with all the necessary amenities.
  • Environmental Campsites: For those seeking a more intimate connection with nature, these campsites provide a serene setting.
  • Hike or Bike Campsites: Ideal for the adventurous spirit, these sites cater to visitors arriving on foot or two wheels.

  • Consider visiting during the off-peak season for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellation policies; sometimes last-minute openings can provide an unexpected opportunity.
  • Explore nearby camping options if your preferred dates are unavailable at Castle Crags.
