Hawks Hideaway Camping, LLC

17 sites ¡ Lodging, RVs, Tents7 acres ¡ Cottonwood, AZ
We offer various camping accommodations, as well as a teepee. See our different listings for info on each. A few choice examples of local activities to do on or very near to our campsite include: Bird watching, hiking, river rafting or tubing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, stargazing, and even rockhounding. This area conforms to the Arizona Dark Sky initiative, and while we are not dark-sky certified, we've had several guests compliment us on our location. When it comes to rockhounding, or amateur geology, this is a fantastic area for exploration and study.  The cliff walls of the Verde River offer clear and distinct sedimentary layers, and the frequent flooding of the massive sandy riverbed reveals countless undiscovered treasures. We gladly welcome pets, including horses, as long as the guests inform us of their presence, and takes care of all their needs, including cleaning up any mess. There is a professional horse-boarding field and stables adjacent to our property, and a long pleasant trail allows horseback riders to follow the Verde Greenway into Old Town Cottonwood if they so desire. Please remember that this is a natural and secluded spot located directly adjacent to the state-maintained Verde Ripparian Greenway and the Verde River. This means you may encounter wildlife and pests associated with being in such close connection to nature. Be prepared to tuck your food away and bring ample protection from the insects.

Sun & Moon Geo Dome Retreat

2 sites ¡ Lodging2 acres ¡ Dewey, AZ
It seems like nearly everyone who comes here says this is a peaceful place!  It's like being out in the country whilst still being close enough to so many things, halfway between Sedona and Prescott, in a neighborhood with dirt roads and farm animals in which horses have the right away. The mountains are hypnotic. The air is clean. The stars are breathtaking. You can see the Milky Way on a clear night. The sunsets and sunrises are gorgeous and we see a lot of double rainbows here. The dome is fully furnished for 4 people. Inside there's a queen bed, futon, clean linens, table w/chairs, portable a/c, electric heater; propane heater, lamps, microwave (for indoor cooking), ice maker, Keurig coffee maker, mini-fridge, USB & outlets for small devices (light electrical usage only), and WIFI is available. Plus a yoga mat, books, & a binder with food and sightseeing recommendations for the area. Outside there's a picnic table, propane grill with side burner, propane firepit with comfortable seating surrounding. The clear dome windows are showing signs of aging, so the best star and sunset/sunrise viewing is outside. The outhouse building is equipped with a camping toilet, pump sink, and a camping shower (now heated!). One towel per guest, grill utensils, cups, and plate ware provided. Bring disposables if you do not want to wash your own dishes. Most of the time guests are able to park next to the dome but sometimes, weather depending, it will be necessary to park and walk in about a hundred feet away from the dome. Also on the property you'll find a walking path carved out through the trees behind the dome with a medicine wheel and labyrinth. The property is located in a rural neighborhood so there are other houses around, but at a far distance, with still plenty of privacy.  There are lots of animals like cardinals, hawks, owls, blue jays, roadrunners, hummingbirds, jackrabbits, cottontails, coyotes, and mule deer.  Farm animals like donkeys make sounds in the distance which is pretty comical at times. There are occasional sightings of beer, wolves, and mountain lions. The location is central to so many incredible places to explore. Within an hour each direction, there is distinctly different natural terrain to discover. Our local Mortimer Farm is 7 miles away and has a bakery (breakfast/sandwiches/treats), seasonal activities including pick your own food, farm dancing, and monthly farm to table dinners. We also have a local winery, golf course, café, pizzeria, subway and BBQ restaurant.  Here are some of the sight seeing possibilities you could use this location to launch from, just to get your mind percolating: Grand Canyon (2.5 hours)Devil’s Bridge (Sedona) Cathedral rock (Sedona) Bell Rock (Sedona) Oak Creek Canyon (Sedona) Bumblebee Giant Saguaros (North Phoenix) Watson’s Lake (Prescott) Granite Dels (Prescott) Ghost Town Tour (Jerome) Lowell Observatory (Flagstaff) Wupatki National Monument (Flagstaff) Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument (Flagstaff) Arizona Snowbowl (Flagstaff) Antelope Canyon (Page) Lake Powell (Page) Horseshoe Bend (Page) Petrified Forest National Park (2.75 hours) Meteor Crater National Landmark (2 hours) Walnut Canyon National Monument (Flagstaff) Montezuma Castle National Monument and Well (Camp Verde) Out of Africa Wildlife Park (Camp Verde) Desert Botanical Gardens (Phoenix) Wine Tasting (Page Springs) It's my intention that anyone who stays here, leaves more nourished in spirit, more firmly planted in their true selves and more deeply in alignment with nature's rhythm. Looking forward to your visit!

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE LAND: Our property borders 10K acres of the national forest, but the tent is not in the middle of nowhere. We are at the edge of a residential neighborhood, and Mingus Ave is 1/2 mile away. This provides a unique experience of living close to nature, yet it is conveniently only 17 minutes to Sedona and 5 minutes to Old Town Cottonwood. Expect to see a couple of other houses, hear some traffic noise, and possibly hear a few barking dogs. If you're a light sleeper, there is a sound machine and ear plugs available. The spacious bathroom includes a hot/cold water sink and a spacious changing area. We have a regularly cleaned and sanitized porta-potty for the toilet arrangements. WEATHER & THE ELEMENTS: During the summer months, the tent gets quite hot inside. Most people are out exploring during this time, so it's not a big deal. We can share some lovely creekside swimming spots for cooling dips. The temps cool quickly at sundown, and the tent gets comfortable immediately. In the winter, temperatures can dip below freezing. Make sure to bring a heavy sleeping bag (or borrow ours) and warm clothes for hanging out by the fire or in the kitchen. PACKING LIST: * Flashlight or headlamp * Sleeping bag or bedding (or borrow ours at no cost) * Cooler and ice * Wood for fire pit (unless there is a fire ban in the summer) HIKE & BIKE OUT THE BACK DOOR: If you have a desire to explore, there is an epic hiking and mountain biking trail network that can be accessed right from the property. The best camping near Tuzigoot National Monument guide

Overview

About

This small monument preserves the ruins of Sinagua Indian dwellings in a pueblo. This village was once home to around 250 people. Abandoned in the 15th century, the ancient buildings are mostly crumbling walls just a few feet high. One building is complete with a restored ceiling. A ladder leads to the roof providing a cool place to hang out in the heat of the summer. Sitting atop the building on the sandstone ridge, you can get some great views.

Start your visit at the small visitor center built in the style of the original dwellings. Don't miss the interesting exhibition of Indian artifacts. A wheelchair-accessible path loops up and around the hill. As you look down across the Verde River valley, you can see layered cliffs and ridges.

Follow a quarter-mile trail from the center to the Tavasci Marsh, one of Arizona's largest marshlands. Bird watchers can spot migratory birds that gather at certain times of the year. Keep a lookout for unusual bird species such as the great horned owl. In the far distance, spot large and colorful spoil heaps formed by waste from the old copper mines of the Black Hills.

The monument lies east of Clarkdale. Cottonwood is the closest town. A visit here takes around half an hour and is best done in cooler weather as there is little shade.

Pitch your tent or park your RV in nearby campgrounds. There's a good choice of small and medium-sized sites in the area including some lovely mountain retreats up in the cool forests.
