Kasilof is a lovely little town fifteen miles south of Soldotna, on the scenic Kenai Peninsula. It’s also home to Johnson State Recreation Area, a hot spot that gets packed in the summer months. It’s pretty darn easy to see why, with the abundance of recreation opportunities it serves up. With 332 acres of wooded land surrounding Johnson Lake, you just might get sucked in. Excellent camping is a given, but there’s also so much to explore outside of your tent. The views are nothing short of phenomenal (but would you expect anything less from Alaska?) and the wildlife watching is top-notch. Fishing along the Kasilof River and at Johnson Lake are also big draws. Take a stroll, launch your canoe into the water, breathe in that crisp Alaskan air, and soak it all in.
