Tucked away in the Alaska Range, you’ll find the quiet Fielding Lake State Recreation Area, sitting pretty at 2,973 feet above sea level. Out here above the treeline, ice can linger on the lake until July, but that’s hardly a hindrance. The boat launch will get you in and out of the water with ease, and the fishing is absolutely fantastic. You can cast your line for Arctic Grayling, lake trout, and burbot, just read up on state fishing regulations before heading out. The campground is rustic, with 17 campsites, and even toilets. If that sounds a bit too primitive for your tastes, there’s a public use cabin that can be reserved.
