True to it's name, the stars are amazing! I saw a shooting star within a few minutes of looking at the sky! The camp ground is way out there! Keep in mind, however, this is a rough campsite. If you use a tent, make sure you bring a tarp to put under the tent to protect from the sharp plant roots. We ended up car camping because I didn't want to destroy my tent. Also, watch where you walk. There were places where horse, cow, and dog manure are scattered about among the brush. There are no tables, fire rings, chairs, bathrooms, or water, so make sure you come prepared. The mountain view is lovely! Watching the sun rise over the snow capped mountains and the sand dunes was breathtaking! Make sure you ask the camp host for directions to Great Sand Dunes and Zapata. Also, make sure you get clear directions to the site - GPS won't get you there.

The campsite was small for each mowed place. Large tents would not be able to fit. Hiking with this view was amazing! Great Sand Dunes National ParkGreat Sand Dunes National Park

Great view of the mountains and stars. The designated camping area was small and primitive. It's very isolated and quiet. Breathtaking view of the sunrise over the mountains.

Zapata Under The Stars was an amazing camping experience! The view of the mountains was great and the hosts were so friendly and helpful. This was my first real camping experience (with other seasoned campers) and I can't wait to visit this site again.

Loved our stay at Zapata Under The Stars. Todd was an awesome host - he gave us some great insight to the area and shared some great stories with us. The communal fire ring was a sweet touch to the campground. It was fun sharing the atmosphere with other campers and hearing more stories around the fire ring late at night. Unbelievable sunrise as well. We will definitely be back!

We had such a great time staying at Zapata Under the Stars! The location was beautifullll - and so close to both Great Sand Dunes National Park AND the Zapata Waterfall. Todd and Cindy were both excellent hosts and were so welcoming and accommodating :) Be aware that the sites are pretty primitive and wild - but that's the beauty! Also no fires except for an awesome communal fire that is maintained by the hosts

Look forward to staying here again!

This spot was incredibly secluded and perfect for our group. The views were incredible and the stars were so bright we were overwhelmed with the beauty. Plenty of space for the tents and cars.

The sites that are shown on the map before you book are not the sites that you’re actually using. You are sent a map and directions after you book with Henrietta that shows you a more secluded site that is not as close to town. They are pretty far secluded from town and not labeled by numbers but rather named after stars. We were the only ones out there so we got our choice of sites. There is plenty of space for multiple groups without being on top of each other.

Make sure you clean up your camp after using it to this place can stay as pristine as it was when we found it.

It was a beautiful and very remote spot. The road was bumpy but the stars were beautiful. Lots of wind so keep that in mind with cooking and your tent! My dog loved running free out there!
