This property on Amelia Street is the only 10-acre parcel in Ridgway.  Years ago, it was part of a larger parcel, owned by an eccentric woman - a very wealthy land owner.  She and the famous Marie Scott were land-owning buddies back in the day. I purchased this land in 1999 and actually moved onto the property in 2005 after renovations.  The cabin you will be staying in was renovated in 2012 when a bathroom was added.  The property supports horses and llamas. All are friendly, most of them are retired - the horses, that is...the llamas are lawn ornaments. Cottonwood Creek and the Dallas River run through the property.  This cabin is in a peaceful setting between the San Juans and Cimarrons. This horse sanctuary is a short walk to town. A bicycle is available. Enjoy the quietude of the landscape where you are free to walk, play music, write or paint. Or simply do nothing.

Great cozy stay
Had an amazing time on Alice’s property, she was very kind and the cabin was wonderful and the horses and animals were friendly! Would totally recommend for a cool spot outside of ouray, telluride and orvis hot springs was only 5 minutes away

Rustic Cabin on Horse Sanctuary
Cozy cabin on a horse sanctuary.
Fantastic place to stay. Miss Alice is a wonderful host, and Rigeway is a sweet little town.

Rustic Cabin on Horse Sanctuary
This is a great place to stay if you want to learn about horses. The cabin was cozy and there's plenty to explore in the surrounding areas including multiple hot springs.

Rustic Cabin on Horse Sanctuary
The cabin was spacious, more than adequately equipped, clean and well kept up. It was a little off the beaten path and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. It did get a little warm in the afternoon and early evening inside the cabin (it was the middle of July), but once the sun went down we opened the back window and the front door and turned on one of the fans and it cooled down quite nicely. Alice was a cheerful and gracious host and left us to ourselves, which we appreciated. She was very responsive when we did ask for help. We had a very relaxing time and would gladly stay at Thunder Heart again!

Rustic Cabin on Horse Sanctuary
We loved staying with Alice at Thunder Heart Horst Sanctuary! We stopped off her after a trip in the San Juan mountains and the cabin was so relaxing. I loved meeting all of Alice's horses and hearing about her life. Stay her if you can and experience an awesome corner of Colorado.

Rustic Cabin on Horse Sanctuary
Alice provided one of the most meaningful camping experiences my partner and I have ever come across. The cabin is located on the land where she houses horses she has taken in. The cabin has all of the great amenities one would need, fully furnished with pots and pans, towels, coffee, sheets and bedding, etc. There is also a TV, and wifi, and the cabin is furnished with Alices' paintings of the horses, adding a real personal feel the home. The cabin is also located on the outskirts of Ridgway, providing you with the close proximity of being close to stores, but nestled into the hillside, leaving it feeling remote. It also has 360 views of the San Juan mountain range. With the supervision of the host Alice, you can go back to the barn and learn about and watch her feed the horses! Once you've settled in the for evening, you can head to Orvis hot spring which is a mile or two from the cabin, or you can head further into the San Juans and Ouray to hike, climb, & explore. 20 minutes from Ouray, 1 hour from Telluride, and an hour or so from Black Canyon of the Gunnison makes this cabin the perfect stopover for anyone looking to do any season exploring!
