San Luis Star Gazer Retreat
Very Disappointing
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to stay in the campsite. I had received a message from Jamie that he would be away while we were to camp here and received no response when I asked for some pro tips prior to our arrival. We got to the “site” right at sundown and followed the instructions on the listing, the views were amazing but sadly there was no actual spot to be found…no fire pit and definitely no where for us to lay a tent down as everything was so over grown. The only thing that made this enjoyable was his neighbor, James who was kind enough to come out and help us look for said camp spot. We ended up driving to a town two hours away (as it is Labor Day weekend and everything is booked). Super disappointing for our first Hip Camp experience…would have been a great spot for star gazing :(

Bright stars & open skies
One of our favorite Hipcamps! Location was great - not too far from the Great Sand Dunes National Park, but far enough away to have your own private, open space. This site defintiely lives up to its name - we experienced amazing stars, complete silence, and a beautiful sunrise. This is a great place to experience the San Luis Valley. Jamie is very sweet and a responsive and helpful host. Our only misshap was that we misread the directions and started to put our tent out on James's property across the street instead of Jamie's...but figured it out before there were any issues!

Neighbor discharged his firearm repeatedly at 11pm. Jamie's first response was ambiguous and unconcerned. If you park where Jamie suggests, the shots woukd have been a mere 50 feet away. Jamie's coordinates and longform written directions were both wrong and cost me an hour of driving around. He did refund the reservation, but that doesn't cover a 1am motel and 30 mile drive I chose to do because I felt unsafe. Missed the meteor shower because of this nonsense.

Random but good experience
In a good way, this place was the most random location I have ever stayed at. It isn't much more than a cleared off dirt patch. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not another person around, except the gentlemen who lives across the road, so no noise pollution from people or cars. "Star Retreat" was correct. You can see every star in the sky, and I have never seen the milky way so clear. This would be a tough one to stay at if it had rained, but dry it is a good and quite place if you are looking for a different experience. Only minor complaint is that there is no chair marking the site, but only the cushion that was probably in the chair. A sign would help out a lot on confirming that one had found the correct location.

AMAZING
This campground was amazing. Our directions took us a little bit to short from the destination and we arrived when it was dark so it was a little bit hard to find but when we did it was spectacular! The sky was full of stars and it was really private. Really beautiful space! Would love to go back here if I’m in the area again. Something to have in mind is that it gets very cool during night!
