Purgatoire Riverbottom

Lots of space right up against the river, we're gonna make another trip there on our next day off. Fit a car and two tents easily and was soooo close to downtown, 11/10

This was such an awesome spot to stay in Trinidad. It's proximity to the downtown area was perfect - you could walk or bike. It was super easy to get to and easy to find with the directions you're given.
There are 4 different campsites for you to choose from, all of which are super secluded and have access to the river - the host has created little pools for you to sit and relax in the river. If you find yourself being the only one at the camp, you have free roam to walk the trails from one river bridge to the other. Speaking of, one of the river bridges is an abandoned train bridge, which adds a uniqueness to the spot.
It's a great spot for fishing, the city has restocked the river twice already with huge trout, everyone seems to catch something each time they come down.
At night, the cops make their rounds back here just to check on you - which is cool, there never was any time I didn't feel safe here. It's a very 420 friendly spot, our camp host said the cops are okay with you smoking back here, they won't harass you about it.
Down the road from the campground is a dog park and a riverwalk area. If you're wanting to wake up and get breakfast while you're here, Tony's diner is right down the street as well and has good breakfast & the Purkatory Coffee House has the best lattes. Stay for a few days and really just get to enjoy your time down by the river and exploring Trinidad.

What a wonderful get-away to nature without ever leaving the city. This is a beautiful piece of property right next to a beautiful clear river (stocked) with lovely sandy beach spots for camping. The crazy thing is you would never know that you can walk less than 2 blocks and be right in the thick of some of the best spots in the city. Good primitive camping. Wish the timing had been such that we could have spent more time enjoying the spot and exploring the city. Our host was very welcoming, and came down to check that we had everything we needed. Very hospitable. This was our first HipCamp experience, and it was a very positive one.

Beautiful site! You can tell Dusty has put a lot of work into it. The dogs enjoyed their frequent dips into the cool water. Would definitely stay again.

The best thing about this site, for me, was the river – taking a refreshing dip in the awesome little pools and relaxing to the sound of flowing water. I booked this site just before arriving in Trinidad on a Saturday morning. Dusty responded promptly, met me when I arrived and showed me around. Because no one else was booked that night, he had me set up at the far end, in what would usually be a shared common area. There was a nice sandy spot for a tent, which was just steps away (but still elevated) from the river, and a short walk to parking.

If you are looking for a beautiful, convenient spot from which to explore the area, this is a great choice. Trinidad is an interesting city that is showing signs of revitalization. But I also appreciated that there were still photos of past rodeo queens on display in shop windows along Main Street! It definitely has charm and is worth exploring.

If, however, you are looking for a campsite that is quiet and private, this may not be the place (or at least the site) for you. There were a lot of people tubing the river throughout the day and many would stop along the shore of the campground, enjoying the pools and wandering around. The river walk is on the opposite shore and it was very busy while I was there, including a lot of foot traffic on the railroad bridge and tracks along the back of the site. There was a direct line of sight from the tracks to the campsite, which didn’t lend much privacy, especially as the foot traffic continued into the evening. Ultimately, I ended up not feeling comfortable staying here alone, but would still recommend the campground. I think the other sites might be more private and the campground would be great for groups. It’s a cool spot in the middle of a city and Dusty is very accommodating.

This is my new favorite camping spot! I’ve had such a great time while being nice out here! The host is wonderful, kind, and went above and beyond to ensure that we were safe and comfortable. The campsites are secluded and private, yet close enough to the city that you are able to get anything you might need. I can’t recommend this place enough! I will be back!

Awesome spot and Dusty is a super gracious host.

The site was very close to downtown Trinidad which was nice and new public access walking paths to the site are apparently in progress. The site lacked an adequate bathroom which was advertised. The site has future potential if a few improvements are made including controlling the vegetation and improving the paths to the riverside campsites.

We have added a porta potty. We do state that we recommend our campgrounds for experience campers who enjoy rugged uneven trails and undeveloped camp sites. We enjoy the contrast to the many parks which often have campsites out in the open and in close proximity of each other. Often trees are picked clean of branches up to about 9 feet. Often those that are primarily undisturbed, require hiking, higher altitudes, longer travel time and don't have the convenience of quickly picking up necessities.
