ODD? well, let's see....  At OddUsSee Hideaway Mountain (OHM) in CO, we joyfully welcome Hip Camp souls to sojourn with us in the eastern slopes of our Colorado Rockies!  Grab your camping goods & scurry right-on-up to our 21-acre homesteaded mining claims that are surrounded by mountains in southern-central Colorado.  We are snuggled between the majestic Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range (aka Shining Mountains by indigenous ancestors) which are a few miles west of us & sit at the foot of The Wet Mountain Range on our east side.

During our Hip Camp infancy, we offer some hunky-dory tent spaces to suit varied styles & choices. Examples are:  for you privacy seekers, there’s a hidden ravine among a serene aspen grove beneath huge rock-croppings in our ‘Outback’ (#5);  then another spot we call 'The Peak' (#4) is atop a 9000’ hillside between two shallow mining-digs with a nice view of the Cristos & the occasional wild turkey visits.  Note: these 2 sites (#4 & 5) will need to be packed-in a short distance. OHM's 3 sites that autos can access are #s 3, 2, & 1.  Tents are welcome along the outskirts of a 30' wide space we call the 'Tree Circle' (#3) that has been classified as an ancestral Native American sacred center with nearby CMT (Culturally Modified Trees). The ultra-best view of the miles-long Cristo Range is out on the ‘Peninsula’ (#2) which is a flattish piñon grove with abundant cacti…lol ;*}    However, #1 has great flat spots for your tent if you like being where the action is which is closer to the entrance thus all the humanoid happenings and great view of the Cristos (plus it's where the electricity is for vancampers & the pit-privy ;*);  variations galore for camping on this-here Hideaway.

A major notation:  on the OddUsSee Hideaway, OHM, we recycle, reuse & UpCycle almost 100%! In fact, our homestead structures are at least 90% re-used goods. The 1700 sq ft ‘Eatin House’ (kitchen & meeting space) is an eclectic hybrid almost entirely built of re-used doors, windows, cans, pallets, strawbale, cordwood, bottles…. u name it—grin! Also, the loved-by-all 16’ dome is on an earthship-type rammed earth tire foundation sitting under 30,000 cans, bottles, a car window, & other great ‘finds’.  We shall also affectionately mention our sustained ’temporary grass-shack’ homestead built very quickly on the cheap of straw bales more than 2 decades ago-- lol ;*}

By mid-summer 2018, our UpCycled Dome will be spiffed up thus available for Hip Campers.  Then by 2019, our 16’ tired-n-tattered yurt will hopefully be re-clothed & ready for ya’ll.  Thanks to you Hip Campers’ encouragement & inspiration, we can continue forward with other unique offerings.

The umpteen experiences of Nature in the Rockies abound only 8 miles across the Wet Mountain Valley from OHM. All skill levels of hikers, from casual sauntering to hard-core, will lavish the 100-mile long Rainbow Trail with 30+ off-shoot trails leading up to mountain peaks & to 50+ high elevation lakes; included are the Crestone Peak & Crestone Needle which are world renowned for technical climbers. Also, there are 9 14ers above tree-line nearby to savor.

Silver Cliff & Westcliffe are the only two hidden-valley incorporated settlements in the Wet Mountain Valley.  They are a quick jaunt only 5 miles west of our OddUsSee camp toward the Cristos by driving down 96 SH on the Frontier Pathways Scenic and Historic Byway. They are highly honored as an IDA International Dark Sky Community! Their designation in 2015 made them Colorado’s very first IDSC as well as the world’s 9th & highest ;*}

Within the quaint townships are numerous eateries & suppliers. Plus, the All Aboard Westcliffe & Silver Cliff historical museums; Smokey Jack Observatory in The Bluff Park’s open-sky offering occasional star events; Historic Jones Theater which presents newer released movies as well as live music & theater connected to Westcliffe Center for Performing Arts; the unique Feed Store Amphitheater offers ‘Shakespeare in the Sangres’ each summer & musical events including a free music concert most Sunday afternoons May thru September; remarkably gifted artists & galleries; Cliff Lane’s bowling alley;  Altitude Rec Center with indoor swimming pool and even our own radio station which is entirely volunteer operated & sponsors constant music of all genres.

Custer County has about 4500 year-round residents & though that number doubles every summer, there is not even one single traffic light in the county.  However, there are dozens of significant places to embrace. That list includes Mission Wolf; Bishop’s Castle; the still active Bear Basin Historic Ranch; an abundance of alpaca, buffalo, prized-hay, cattle & horse ranches; Lakes DeWeese & Isabel;  numerous National Registered Historic Places such as Beckwith Ranch; Greenhorn Valley & Greenhorn Mountain Bike Trails;  & thrilling places for 4-wheeling.  PLUS within an hour or so drive you’ll find the Arkansas River headwaters with white water rafting outfits; Royal Gorge Bridge & Park; & the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Museum in Canon City; Pueblo Reservoir and more.

There are work-trade opportunities on OddUsSee Hideaway.  We welcome a message for details.

OddUsSee Hideaway is an OHM place for adventures, serenity, and more for sure. Come join us.

I could not recommend a better campsite if you are looking to experience the majesty of the Colorado mountains. We set up our tent on the ridge, and woke up the next morning to the sight of the golden sun rising on the snow capped peaks. What an unforgettable experience!

Such a cool property! We loved sitting with our dinners or a beer and watching the gorgeous sunsets over the mountains, and then waking up to the sunrise reflecting off of them in the morning. You're an easy drive into the small town of Westcliffe if you need anything, but otherwise the property offers a few different sites so that you can be pretty secluded, or closer to the Eatin' House if you prefer. Shanae was an incredibly gracious host; friendly and always ready with a story. Her home and property are her constant projects, and it was fascinating to see and hear about all the things she was building and working on. We had an awesome weekend here!

Shenae was amazing, a true teacher by trait. This beautiful and sacred native land holds so many wonders. Just to name a few; culturally modified trees, spiritual tree circles, petrified wood, crystallized rocks, countless wildlife tracks and markings, and a perfect view of the Spaniards Sangre de Cristo mountains.

Shenae was so kind enough to let us stay in this beautiful dome which was created out of hundreds of thousands of recycled aluminum cans, colorful glass bottles, and cement, and contained a bed, electric, and a fire place, although we couldn’t use it since Colorado was experiencing a drought.

Because we were so eager to hear all of the stories Shenae had to offer, she took us on a little hike throughout her land and told us every factual bit of the native history, as well as her own. She built (and is continuing to build) what is known as ‘the eating house’ which is exactly what it sounds like; a massive structure comprised of swings, string lights, funky music, all the cooking utilities you need, and more.

Just a 5-10 minute drive down the road into town where there is tons of restaurants, bars, coffee, and a grocery store or two, as well as a local recreational center with a pool, sauna, and gym.

From compost toilets, to an outdoor shower over looking the mountains and tire swings, this was a completely eco-self-sustainable stay. This should go without saying, but I do not reccomend this spot for those who do not hold the capacity to respect the land and Shenae’s creations. Come with an easy, open heart and mind and you’ll discover so much magic and more.

ahh, Taylor… as you 2 were some of OddUsSee’s first hipcampers, thankfully, your essence will always be a stay of endearment. Your curiosity of this place & the history here (as i know it) was truly encouraging & refreshing. Remembering our chat of you offering a yoga-dance retreat up here, shall always be welcomed. Also, the review & pix are hearteningly appreciated. Many blessings of success guiding your pathway of a dancing life, Shanae’
