We have spent most of our lives living in central California, but longed to move to the mountains and escape the rat-race. We discovered Salida in 2006 after visiting friends in the area. Fell in love, and purchased our 40 acre, raw land parcel in 2007. We wanted a big view and also the challenge of living off-the-grid. What we didn't except was the challenge of drilling 3 dry wells. So.... after almost giving up, we decided to just figure it out! Turns out that rainwater harvesting is very common in many parts of the world...and now for us too!
As soon as our new house was finished, we wanted to move here full time, and we're so happy we did! We were fortunate to be able to retire in 2013, which gave us time to enjoy everything to do here in the Rockies.
We built our little cabin last year and just finished in summer of 2017. We intended it to be used by just for our friends and family, but it turned out so cute that we thought other people would enjoy it to! We love the remoteness, but also close proximity to town.
If you are interested in seeing how an off-the-grid, passive, rainwater harvesting water source all works, we would love to show you our system.
