Description

Located two miles downstream of Crystal Dam at the bottom of Black Canyon, East Portal Campground is shaded by box elder trees. Steep canyon walls define the landscape and rock climbing is only to be attempted by expert climbers. Also of note is the nearby Gunnison River Diversion Tunnel. When first constructed it was an engineering marvel and the longest irrigation tunnel in the world. Camp is open May through mid-October.

It is in the canyon so the weather will definitely cool down fast. You are camping in designated spots next to the parking area and bathrooms. Great fly fishing for browns and rainbows.
