The vibe at The Desert Pensione Joshua Tree
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
The Pensione at JT Bom is such a treat! First off, Cheryl and Jimbo are great hosts. A few days before our trip Cheryl and I touched base and she offered us so many great tips and made us feel super comfortable. They even met us the day of our arrival to help us get settled in and show us around.
The site has everything you need for desert camping. We felt off-the-grid but took comfort knowing we were just a short drive away from town so if we needed anything in a pinch it was easy to pop in and out of camp. It was also comforting to have some running water and a port-o-potty, and while when we camp we try to stay off our phones, there are electrical plugs throughout the game property where we could plug in our little speaker or blow up our air mattress.
We camped in mid-december and were lucky that we had some warmer weather during the day. The temperatures can dip down to the 30°s at night but the little cabin structure on site kept us warm and cozy.
There is also a great fire pit with a detachable grill - perfecting for grilling up burgers and roasting marshmallows!
The sunset views are amazing here - and even on a night where the moon was fairly full and bright, we could see millions of stars. It was beautiful!
The surrounding town is great too. If you're looking for local entertainment you can pop into the Joshua Tree Saloon or make the trip out to Pioneer Town. If you're not in the mood to make breakfast onsite you can head out to Frontier Cafe for some yummy cold brew coffee and breakfast sandwiches! There are also some great little antique and vintage shops along the strip that are great places to pick up a souvenir.
While our trip was short lived - we had such a fabulous time and will definitely be back again soon! Thank you Cheryl & Jimbo!
The PENSIONE was fantastic! I brought my friend visting from Seattle out for a little adventure. After a motorcycle ride from LA to Joshua Tree, the accommodations were perfect- solar energy to charge your phones, a fire pit to get cozy and grill, a picnic table for a game of cards, and a comfy roof over your head to shield you from the desert chills. The grounds have a cool vibe with great art and cool vibes. Even the sign to the outhouse has character!
The location is a close drive to the town of Joshua Tree for breakfast, dinner and fun bars, but is far enough out to feel completely in nature. There is a multitude of shops to pick up supplies for your hipcamp campout and the park is close for hiking and exploring.
Jimbo and Cheryl are also great hosts. They were friendly and welcoming. They had great advice on local places for food, drinks, music and art. I will definitely be back in the future and will bring a crew for the adventure!
Great spot near the park! Cool property and friendly hosts. We really enjoyed our stay. One thing to note: photos show a bed in the cabin, but there isn't one so make sure to bring your sleeping pads/air mattress, blankets, pillows, etc.
I really enjoyed The Desert Pensione. The room was helpful in keeping the wind out. Fire pit worked great. Bathroom was close by. Loved the lights. Best of all you don't really have to share it with anyone (there is one other campsite but it is on the other side of a building and you can't see it from here). And of course it is only a 20 min drive to get into the park (5 min to the visitor center). Cheryl and Jimbo are great hosts.
We loved our stay at The Desert Pensione. Before our visit, Cheryl emailed giving us detailed driving instructions that were very helpful. Jimbo met us and gave a tour of the property. We can't wait to visit again once the two bedroom house (located close to the Pensione) is completed!
No detail is spared in the design of this unique place. A solar panel powers string lights and outlets for charging. We love this feature, there are always have camera batteries that need to be charged! Another unique feature of this site is the water tower, providing fresh water for cleaning dishes and freshening up. There's even an outdoor shower! The Pensione structure is a great retreat from the desert winds. The weekend we stayed here it was clear enough to see all the way to the snow-capped mountains of Big Bear!
The Desert Pensione is situated close to the 29 Palms Hwy, meaning you're only three minutes away from downtown Joshua Tree. We loved eating at The Natural Sisters Cafe and getting fresh dates from the local Farmers Market, what a treat!
Cheryl met us a couple miles away from the site so she could kindly lead us there since it's on an unmarked road. She gave us a tour and made us feel very welcome. The place itself is a treasure that is a work in progress. Our stay at the Pensione was too short - it was so magical and we had everything we needed, we wish we could've had more time. The backdrop is otherworldly, and you feel like you're in your own little world, especially at night under the stars in front of the fire. We had so much fun and were able to make great memories. Definitely coming back! Thank you Cheryl & Jimbo!
We loved the Desert Pensione! Jimbo was very helpful and met us in town to show us how to get to the hipcamp site. We were very close to the town and close to the park. Grocery stores were fairly close, there were some spots in town for food and some little shops. The cabin was perfect for our needs — we brought our sleeping bags and sleeping pads. We also brought a tent in addition, and some of us slept outside. The one thing that was a bit of a bummer was the proximity to the road; this could be seen as a positive or negative depending on whether you want to be able to skip into town easily, or whether you want solitude. Overall, our stay was great! Thank you!
