The vibe at The Desert Pensione Joshua Tree
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
The Pensione at JT Bom is such a treat! First off, Cheryl and Jimbo are great hosts. A few days before our trip Cheryl and I touched base and she offered us so many great tips and made us feel super comfortable. They even met us the day of our arrival to help us get settled in and show us around.
The site has everything you need for desert camping. We felt off-the-grid but took comfort knowing we were just a short drive away from town so if we needed anything in a pinch it was easy to pop in and out of camp. It was also comforting to have some running water and a port-o-potty, and while when we camp we try to stay off our phones, there are electrical plugs throughout the game property where we could plug in our little speaker or blow up our air mattress.
We camped in mid-december and were lucky that we had some warmer weather during the day. The temperatures can dip down to the 30°s at night but the little cabin structure on site kept us warm and cozy.
There is also a great fire pit with a detachable grill - perfecting for grilling up burgers and roasting marshmallows!
The sunset views are amazing here - and even on a night where the moon was fairly full and bright, we could see millions of stars. It was beautiful!
The surrounding town is great too. If you're looking for local entertainment you can pop into the Joshua Tree Saloon or make the trip out to Pioneer Town. If you're not in the mood to make breakfast onsite you can head out to Frontier Cafe for some yummy cold brew coffee and breakfast sandwiches! There are also some great little antique and vintage shops along the strip that are great places to pick up a souvenir.
While our trip was short lived - we had such a fabulous time and will definitely be back again soon! Thank you Cheryl & Jimbo!
The PENSIONE was fantastic! I brought my friend visting from Seattle out for a little adventure. After a motorcycle ride from LA to Joshua Tree, the accommodations were perfect- solar energy to charge your phones, a fire pit to get cozy and grill, a picnic table for a game of cards, and a comfy roof over your head to shield you from the desert chills. The grounds have a cool vibe with great art and cool vibes. Even the sign to the outhouse has character!
The location is a close drive to the town of Joshua Tree for breakfast, dinner and fun bars, but is far enough out to feel completely in nature. There is a multitude of shops to pick up supplies for your hipcamp campout and the park is close for hiking and exploring.
Jimbo and Cheryl are also great hosts. They were friendly and welcoming. They had great advice on local places for food, drinks, music and art. I will definitely be back in the future and will bring a crew for the adventure!
Great spot near the park! Cool property and friendly hosts. We really enjoyed our stay. One thing to note: photos show a bed in the cabin, but there isn't one so make sure to bring your sleeping pads/air mattress, blankets, pillows, etc.
I really enjoyed The Desert Pensione. The room was helpful in keeping the wind out. Fire pit worked great. Bathroom was close by. Loved the lights. Best of all you don't really have to share it with anyone (there is one other campsite but it is on the other side of a building and you can't see it from here). And of course it is only a 20 min drive to get into the park (5 min to the visitor center). Cheryl and Jimbo are great hosts.
We loved our stay at The Desert Pensione. Before our visit, Cheryl emailed giving us detailed driving instructions that were very helpful. Jimbo met us and gave a tour of the property. We can't wait to visit again once the two bedroom house (located close to the Pensione) is completed!
No detail is spared in the design of this unique place. A solar panel powers string lights and outlets for charging. We love this feature, there are always have camera batteries that need to be charged! Another unique feature of this site is the water tower, providing fresh water for cleaning dishes and freshening up. There's even an outdoor shower! The Pensione structure is a great retreat from the desert winds. The weekend we stayed here it was clear enough to see all the way to the snow-capped mountains of Big Bear!
The Desert Pensione is situated close to the 29 Palms Hwy, meaning you're only three minutes away from downtown Joshua Tree. We loved eating at The Natural Sisters Cafe and getting fresh dates from the local Farmers Market, what a treat!
Cheryl met us a couple miles away from the site so she could kindly lead us there since it's on an unmarked road. She gave us a tour and made us feel very welcome. The place itself is a treasure that is a work in progress. Our stay at the Pensione was too short - it was so magical and we had everything we needed, we wish we could've had more time. The backdrop is otherworldly, and you feel like you're in your own little world, especially at night under the stars in front of the fire. We had so much fun and were able to make great memories. Definitely coming back! Thank you Cheryl & Jimbo!
We loved the Desert Pensione! Jimbo was very helpful and met us in town to show us how to get to the hipcamp site. We were very close to the town and close to the park. Grocery stores were fairly close, there were some spots in town for food and some little shops. The cabin was perfect for our needs — we brought our sleeping bags and sleeping pads. We also brought a tent in addition, and some of us slept outside. The one thing that was a bit of a bummer was the proximity to the road; this could be seen as a positive or negative depending on whether you want to be able to skip into town easily, or whether you want solitude. Overall, our stay was great! Thank you!
Cheryl and Jimbo were great hosts! My boyfriend and I had a great time at Pensione, I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Joshua Tree. The camp also has wonderful amenities; running water, electricity, and a newly installed flushing toilet! Overall, it was a great experience!
This place was awesome. Beautiful private setting, close to everything in Joshua Tree. One of a kind experience. Cheryl and Jimbo have thought of everything; each detail was charming and so well thought-out. We love camping but didn't want to lug all of our gear from Toronto, Canada so this was a perfect in-between. We will definitely be back!
The PENSIONE was a cool little spot tucked away near Joshua Tree. The location is very photogenic and it feels like youre truly out in the desert even though you can see the road that is not far away. Fire pit with a grill top, shelter, chairs, sink, restroom, and soon to be shower... what else could you want?! Oh yea, they have lighting and solar panels to charge your devices! This place was awesome and definitely worth the visit if you're in the area. Cheryl & Jimbo were cool people and make sure you're set for the night when they show you around.
It is a great space with wonderful hosts. We stayed 2 nights and really loved it. It has enough of the amenities that we like and also you have the feeling of being undisturbed and alone. Its close enough to town and the park to done whatever, we found we just took it easy and enjoyed ourselfs.
Very cool vibe out there in the desert! My husband and I loved the ambience. The Desert Pensione is super cute. The sunset and stars out on the property was amazing! We had a fire with the string lights on in the background and it was so much fun. Having access to a shower and bathroom was great. We were very close to Joshua Tree National Park, Pioneertown, as well as great coffee shops and restaurants. I'd definitely recommend this place and would love to return in the future.
My boyfriend and I had an amazing stay at Pensione!! We are both seasoned outdoor campers and this was our first hip camp stay. We loved the privacy that regular campgrounds can't offer while having the full desert experience. This includes the heat, the stars, the weather, the open area, and the solitude. If needed, all the comforts at home were not far away. The Joshua Trees farmers market was one of the nicest I've ever seen, with all the food needed to bring back to camp to continue to enjoy your stay. Jimbo's new upgrade of a roomy, tiled floor "outhouse" was an extra comfort as there is an actual clean toilet, sink and mirror. The creative artist craftsmenship gave the place an extra sense of a magical wonderland that I have never experienced in any other campground. I highly recommend Pensione for those seeking a homie yet camping experience in the beautiful country of the high desert.
We had a wonderful 2-night experience here! Cheryl was so kind and welcoming and graciously met us on the main road and helped us find the location. Once we were there, we had complete privacy. The only negative is that road noise from Hwy 29 can be a bit loud at night, so bring earplugs if you are sensitive to noise. This little camping compound is charming, thoughtful, well laid out, and has all the amenities you would want for a few nights of desert peace. We loved the outdoor sink and shower under the water tower! We also cooked a great meal of roasted veggies and sausages in the fire pit - there's a cooking grate included, and that puppy gets HOT! Amazing to cook on! There's too many creative little details on the property to talk about, but suffice to say that it's inspiring to be there and see what such a creative couple have made, and I hope to go back in the future and see how it continues to develop!
The Pensione was just what we needed for a quick day-and-a-half trip from LA. Cheryl and Jimbo were extremely responsive the week prior to our trip. The campsite was just remote enough but not too far away from the town of Joshua Tree, which was perfect for us. A fire pit to cozy around, twinkle lights at night, running water from a water tank, and the cabin was quite insulated, keeping us warm even in February. The stars absolutely fill the sky at night. If we get another chance, I'd definitely love to come back in the summer and camp outside. Thanks Cheryl and Jimbo!
Such a cool spot!! My husband and I came for a quiet night away from our kids to unplug and recharge and it was the perfect spot! Unfortunately because of heavy winds we cut our trip a little short but the site was perfection! The fully insulated pensione kept us warm on a very chilly night. Hosts were extremely accommodating and friendly, looking forward to coming back again in warmer weather!
Cheryl and Jimbo are great. Very helpful and accommodating. The campsite was charming and the pictures were a great help to understand the space. It suited our group of 4 campers and the running water, lights, electricity and nearby bathroom made it "luxurious" for desert camping. Location was great since stores, restaurants and the park were just short drives away - far enough to be out on the land, close enough for convenience.
The Pension was exactly what we were looking for! It was an amazing experience. Everything about the house and the surrounding common areas were beautiful. The art and the architecture were incredible. Needless to say our stay was perfect. We wanted a place close to Joshua Tree, but that wasn't just tent camping for the first night of our trip. Cheryl and Jimbo were so kind and helpful with advising on surrounding hikes and places to eat. I would definitely recommend this place to any one looking for a cute get away in a beautiful area. I will definitely be making a trip back to visit the Pesnione next time I head out to Joshua Tree!
Had an amazing time at the Desert Pensione! Cheryl and Jimbo were really nice and the space was clean and cute. One of the days was really windy and Jimbo brought us a little grill to cook our food because he saw us struggling with the fire pit. Would definitely go again!
Cheryl was extremely helpful as we met up with her for our check-in. She thoroughly gave us the run-down of the campsite and even suggested places to eat and places to watch the stars at night. I would definitely come back as soon as the bigger campsite is available as well to bring a few of our friends. A couple of things to keep in mind, the shack does not have any screen doors/windows, so keep in mind the bugs that will crawl into the place to sleep with you! Since this is the case, I would recommend you bringing a back-up tent just in case bugs bother you. We came across a couple of scorpions as well but that is expected, this is their home! Thank you so much for the warm hospitality.
We had a great stay. The site is super close to the town of Joshua Tree for a quick trip if you need it & the enterance to JTNP is just as close There is plenty of room and the details that have been put into this space are truly magical. Take a super close look at the structures, there are so many beautiful details to discover! We can't wait to come back and visit again. Thank you for a great time!
The Pensione and Koti camping site are lovely spot for a getaway! I rung in my 25th birthday at their property with a group of 7! Their facilities are beautifully crafted and has everything you need for a great glamping trip! Cheryl and Jimbo were great hosts who promptly answered questions to ensure that our stay was enjoyable! Will definitely be back one day :)
For someone who isn't a camping expert, but loves to camp with help, this campsite is great. They have everything necessary to make your trip very pleasant. For those who like to car camp, this place is an absolute no brainer. And the owners are extremely responsive and courteous. Definitely recommend.
We have stayed at a few Hipcamp spots and this was by far the best. Cheryl & Jimbo are fantastic hosts and the Pensione is a killer spot. We set up our sleeping pads and sleeping bags in the darling little casita and enjoyed an amazing night by the fire! Mother Nature put on a fantastic show w/ all the stars in the sky. There was a fully functional bathroom w/ running water available. This was luxurious to us as we've been dry camping for the last 10 days. There were some cool features that made staying at the Pensione really great. Fun lighting, an outdoor sink & shower and a great fire pit being a few of them. There was only ONE minimal draw back of the location, and it was very small to us. You could hear a bit of the traffic from the main road in the evening. Again this was minor and we just plugged in Pandora and enjoyed all the other amazing features of this Hipcamp! Thanks again Cheryl & Jimbo! We'll definitely be back :)
The Pensione has been on my list for a while so I was really excited to check it out. Amazingly, it surpassed my expectations: it's secluded, minutes from Joshua Tree NP, and has all the essentials (flushing toilet, water, shade structures, trash cans, fire pit.)
The best part about this property is Jimbo's totally unique, mildly post-apocalyptic architecture style -- sort of like high-end Mad Max. He explained that a lot of the materials he used to construct the buildings on this property were scavenged, some even coming from Coachella's refuse. Probably the coolest toilet setup I've ever seen (I won't spoil the surprise -- check it out yourself.)
Jimbo is also a total hoot, so consider yourself lucky if you happen to get a tour of the property from him. Will definitely be back!
Jimbo and Cheryl are amazing hosts. They were super accommodating and helpful. This was my boyfriend and I's second time back, and I'm sure we'll be back again. The spot is beautiful, clean and has everything you need for a great glamping experience. Close to town, flushing toilets, and tons of shooting stars <3 thanks Jimbo and Cheryl!
The pensione was perfect. My husband loves camping while I'm more of camping novice. The pensione was the perfect blend of rustic Joshua Tree wilderness and essential amenities to suit us both - and our corgi. The bathroom is great, the structure adorable,, and the outdoor shower/wash station makes wash station is ideal. Cheryl and Jimbo have done a great job at creating a destination camping spot.
We had such a wonderful time here. I can confidently say that it looks just like the pictures on the listing. I was a little worried about the restroom, but everything was very clean! We had the whole camp site to ourselves because nobody booked the other one so it was nice, quiet--you can enjoy the camp fire under the stars. Chairs are available, there's a nice canopy attached to the edge of the fence and the pension so you can avoid the sun if it's too hot during the day. There were mini charcoal grill, power outside/inside, etc. Because it's not too far away from the road, you can still see the street lights and you'll hear the cars--but that didn't really bother us because we could clearly see the stars :) Cheryl is so nice. We met up with her by the near saloon and she guided us to the site, gave us a nice tour, making sure we have enough toilet paper, etc. Overall an awesome experience! Thank you Cheryl.
