The vibe at Old West Ranch Site #2
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
From the moment you drive off the I50, along the meandering and beautiful Silverfork Rd and through the gates of the Old West Ranch you know you're in for a digital detox. Here life is simple and off the grid. The site is nestled in a pretty meadow surrounded by towering redwoods. In every direction there are trails, climbs and rivers to explore. Water is pumped fresh off the mountain and Rod provides a great stack of free kindling and firewood per site. All the plots have fire pits but the one we had also had a great suspended iron grate you could lower for cooking your supper. The amenities are basic. The portaloo was the cleanest I've ever been in and for a nominal fee Rod has a great hot outdoor shower for use. The important thing to note about Old West Ranch is be prepared. It's a along drive if you've forgotten the garlic or any other essentials. That said that's what I liked about the place, it forced you to stop doing the usual running around and made you enjoy the moment. Rod is a perfect host. He lets you be but is there if you need any local knowledge or advice on anything. You're allowed to wander Rod's 40 acres to your hearts content. It has a fence all the way round so you can't get too lost. The perfect environment for kids to have the freedom to roam, reminiscent of times past.
Not sure I want to review this place for fear it might become too popular!
This was one of the best camp sites I've been too in a long time. There is plenty of room, two picnic tables to use, a grill lift for the campfire, and enough space between the few sites that you don't feel bothered or hemmed in from other campers (unlike Yosemite campsites). On top of that, Rod's a great guy, super interesting, very nice and chill (his dog Zook also became a quick friend of our group!). The property is well taken care of and there are lots to explore.
We'll definitely be back!
It was great. Lovely view and very quiet, private and serene. We hiked at Caples Creek which was close by and fantastic hiking. Only complaint was that the port-a-potty had not been emptied for a long time and was pretty gross. Other than that, we highly recommend.
Rod is a welcoming camp host and Zuke is an awesome camp dog... grateful for him sharing his property. The camp sites are spacious and the view is tranquil.
The drive up is an easy one and with quick access beautiful swimming holes and hikes.
We are already planing our next trip.
Great site in the trees just south of Lake Tahoe! Rod supplies firewood included in your stay and the sites all have several picnic tables, and really great fire rings with grills. The property pets are just wonderful to hang out with and will quickly become your best friends!
It was awesome. Amazing wilderness around that area to explore with amazing trails.
The camp itself was great, plenty of space and campsites were not too close to each other. Yeh firepitvwas the best, with a grill that we cooked dinner on over the camp fire.
Would highly recommend. The only suggestion I would have to the owner would be to communicate a noise curfew, some other campers were playing music up till 1:00am and ruined the serenity a little. This was more the fault of other inconsiderate campers not the camp itself, but I don't think a noise curfew was communicated which may have helped.
But overall I know we will be returning as it was just lovely.
What a great place to get away from the Crowds. If you are looking for a nice , clean and relaxing campground, this is your place. Campground host Rod is easy going, and very helpful. There are hiking trails and fishing within a 10 Minute Drive. The Campsite is remote, so plan well, the nearest store is at least 30 minute drive. I do a lot of camping and this site is definitely one of the best places I have camped at.
