The Behind the Barn Campsite has five picnic tables with umbrellas, a communal campfire ring and a beautiful private site surrounded by trees. You will enjoy an outdoor hot shower, something everyone should experience! There's even an outdoor sink for washing dishes and teeth. The second story of the compost toilet has a marvelous view!

The Behind the Barn Campsite affords easy access from your car to a flat unloading area near the site with the yellow umbrella. Its called yellow. Really! The next four sites are brown, red, green and tan. All sites are a minimum of 20 feet by 30 feet in size. They all share the communal campfire which has hay bales to sit on (complete with soft things on top of them). Unload your gear and use the Gorilla cart to effortlessly roll your belongings over to your campsite.  And don't worry! The barn doesn't stink because its used just for Elizabeth's storage, not animals.

Just above the Behind the Barn campsite is Shanti’s  “Slanty Cabin.”  It was so named because the floor slants down. Its designed to be a funky, affordable, indoor space to stay for kids or adults. This simple, 400 square - foot apartment has a queen bed in the master bedroom as well as two single beds in the living/dining/kitchen area. Right now we are also installing a stove, sink and counter tops for a kitchenette.

The five Behind the Barn campsites and the Slanty Cabin are ideal for one or more families or larger groups that already know each other and want to have a more private camping experience. If you have any worries about your group camping near others due to COVID, this is your solution! The Behind the Barn Campsite can also be rented for five individual groups or any other combination of groups. Please followthe rule of quiet time after 10 PM to allow future campers to stay here. Come and reconnect with the galaxy of stars overhead.

Feeling lucky to have scored a site, we were looking forward to our stay. Happy to be able to bring the dog. First the site we booked was occupied by someone else. So not the end site as planned. We were literally 5 feet away from sites on either side. Not quite social distancing. The terrain leading to water and toilet very uneven and ripe for someone to trip and get injured. Campsite right next to road. Not worth $100/night at all!

Well, where to start. The ‘sites’ are basically 4 tables in a row with just enough room to put a tent in between. It’s only enough room for 2 sites max, you’ll pretty much actually need to take your tent down to have room to cook or walk around the table. There are cute but very bright lights surrounding the sites that are left on all night, not great for sleeping.

The bathroom is on a little deck overlooking the 4 smashed together sites. When using it, you can SEE all the ppl below and they can SEE you. The compost ‘toilet‘ is a cat litter box 5 feet below you.... You’d have to seriously not care about privacy to feel comfortable with this. There was a tampon on the ground in front of the bathroom the 2 days I was there, not sure who is cleaning up but it didn’t feel clean. Junk laying around, yikes.

The RV site has no hookup, and is next to an open compost pile. The cabin has a slanted floor and definitely isn’t what you’d expect for $200+ a night. The pond site is not next to a lovely pond you could swim in, but a partially drained swampy pool of water breeding mosquitos.

Overall feeling: seems like someone is trying to make as much $$ as possible off their volunteer run animal farm. Has potential but needs a lot of work and a bathroom. I paid for two nights and ran for the hills as soon as I found somewhere else to camp.

We were lucky to snag a camping spot on a holiday weekend, on short notice. Overall the Shanti Permaculture Farm is a great space, but elements of the Behind the Barn camp area were inadequate.

The convenience of the compost toilet, sink, shower, and campfire were great.

Our group was disappointed that our requested “end” spot was given to other campers prior to our arrival. Even during non-pandemic times the area is tight. It could work if a group reserved the entire area. We were not aware that there would be a slope/hill. When I tried to distance from other campers I walked on the slope area and the earth gave way. I fell twice. The space could work if there were only 2-3 campsites instead of 5 and if there were space or a way walk safely from the fire pit and distanced from campers at their picnic tables.

Shanti was a joy for our family of five. The host, Elizabeth, was very kind and let our children feed all of the amazing animals. The campsites were spacious and clean. The quaint town of Occidental is less than five minutes away, and it has a small grocery store, cafe, etc. We look forward to returning again soon, if for no other reason than our children are now demanding that we get a lama =)

This is a dream camp spot with amazing amenities, a kind and attentive host, and lots of space to enjoy camping safely. With a fully enclosed paddock, the location would be ideal for an entire family or group of friends to book out the entire location.

Elizabeth was a lovely host. When I told her the site I booked wasn't quite what we were looking for, she immediately offered me other sites. We ended up getting just what we needed. This is an active farm. so there were tons of ducks, chicken, geese, and even a really cute/goofy llama. Oh and you are just 19 minutes from the epic Sonoma coast beaches. I would suggest "Behind the Barn" if you have a whole group who wants to rent it out. If you want a little more privacy, she has several other sites. Overall, we will be back.

We had a lovely time camping behind the barn! We booked sites #3-#5 and were lucky enough to have the other 2 sites remain unoccupied. Each site can fit 2-3 tents, depending on the size of the tents. I recommend ear plugs at night because the roosters let you know exactly when the sun is about to rise. Elizabeth is a wonderful host and her campsite was perfect for our large group.

This place is just as the name suggests: Shanti. It is a place that warms you up with a wonderful outdoor blanket of peace and tranquility. plenty of options on where to camp, with a very gracious, friendly and helpful host. Liz is an all star when it comes to keeping her guests happy while leaving them to their own experience.
The animals that run throughout the place are amazing, and provided plenty of entertainment. the Garden of Sunflowers... just... wow. so beautiful. waking up each morning to peer out into a field of Mammoth sunflowers with a back drop of that prehistoric Northern California forest is everything.
for its proximity to town you feel adequately secluded for a real camp trip.
This place, Shanti, was such a great experience, I didnt want to leave.
Thank you SO much for the wonderful hospitilty!

Elizabeth was a great host...very communicative and fun to talk to. She gave us a tour of the property where we were able to feed the sheep and collect eggs from the chickens. The campsite itself was wonderful. We stayed "behind the barn." I believe someone wrote a review that there isn't enough space between tables for your tent and that you have to break down your tent to cook. This isn't the case at all. There is plenty of room and in fact where you cook is either over the communal fire or on the provided charcoal grill, both of which are in front of the campsites. Up the stairs are the sink with potable water, two toilets (compost and a Honey Bucket), and the shower. Overall great experience and would definitely return and recommend.
