Welcome to Shangri-La! Once you arrive you will never want to leave. Shangri-La is an expansive experience which rests within a natural desert camp in a secluded spot in North Joshua Tree, just minutes away from Joshua Tree National Park. The quaint Joshua Tree Village is a few miles down the road where you can enjoy art, music, shopping and dining at local mom and pop businesses. Shangri-La offers amazing 360-degree views, simple basic tent or car camping with 5 open campsites with enough room to spread out. You bring everything you need (tent/firewood/supplies/soap/toilet paper/etc.) and we provide the space, water, a flushing toilet and a small fire pit (at each site) to stay warm and toasty during the amazing, quiet and star filled desert nights.
Shangri-La is dog and kid friendly but please let us know about animals ahead of time. There is no power on site, yet we have great cell phone service so you will be able to navigate the area. Local shops such as Joshua Tree Outfitters & Nomad Ventures rent and sell camping equipment. Sam’s Market, Mike’s Liquor in Joshua Tree & Vons or Stater Brothers in Yucca Valley sell firewood. When you arrive, go directly to your designated camp site and please check our Community & Event Board. Additional people must park in the overflow parking area. The area is quiet so be mindful of the noise. ALSO, PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH THE OPEN DESERT, THE DESERT ECOLOGY IS HARDY YET FRAGILE, STICK TO THE ROADS AND TRAILS. Thank You!

I enjoyed a night of quiet and solitude at Shangri-La. After a few days in the busy campgrounds of Joshua Tree National Park it was a pleasant change of pace to come out into the desert, build a campfire, listen to the ravens, and watch the stars emerge as the sun set. The property owners were welcoming and quick to respond to any questions I had. The newly built bathroom with flush toilet and running water was a treat! I'll definitely return to Shangri-La next time I'm in the area.
Shanghai-la was a very nice campground. Very quite with not much around you. Great place for night skies. The road to get there was a bit bumpy but worth it. Facilities were very clean. The owners were great to. Quick to respond to anything we needed. Would definitely stay here again!!
Quiet, secluded and enchanting. The campsite was a godsend after finding all the camping inside Joshua Tree NP full (on a Monday in March!). The owners were there to greet us shortly after we arrived and give us a lay of the land. Wonderful night skies, distant coyotes calling. Great site for tent camping and convenient to the NP. Would stay again.
Diana is SO NICE and she has a nice bathroom there with running water and she has fire rings and the camp site is cute and fenced in which I like and she even drove to us to show us how to get there when we got lost.
This was a very cool site. We had the whole campground to ourselves. Was a bit difficult to find- but is a good way to beat the crowds in JT. Fire pits were provided and hosts helped a lot with finding the place. Had a fun stay and would definitely be back!
Shangri-La is very peaceful and I plan to come back on future trips through Yucca Valley. You sleep in the midst of beautiful creosote. In the distance are the Bullion Mountains, Sheephole Mountains and the hills near Lander. The sky is immense. In the evening, I heard coyotes yipping and howling. And in the morning, a great horned owl. A native kangaroo rat (it looked like one in the dim light) visited as well. The hosts were very responsive and kind. Their directions made it very easy to find the camp sites. There's a very nice bathroom and sink with running water servicing the five sites. I also liked the solar lanterns at each site. Without giving away the location of the Shangri-La, there's a prominent sign at eye level pointing you to the site. You'll be on a well-graded dirt road until you reach the sign. If you love private, serene camping in the desert, you will love Shangri-La!
