El Primo is the first of three properties I have in 29P. When it was just a blank canvas with a leaning wood cabin from the 50's to today,  Learn more about this land: El Primo was born out of a desire to camp away from mainstream camping sites. Today, it's slowly becoming a post-industrial-agriculture tiny, off-grid, farm. In the meantime, it's a Hipcamp that let's you camp inside of a small Quonset Hut, big enough for two adults to enjoy comfortably. There is also a semi-enclosed fenced area that offers privacy to dance the night away and wind blocking while enjoying the view, the outdoor fireplace. South of the property is an unobstructed view of Joshua Tree National Park and the treacherous foothills that wrap around it.  For the like-minded, there's a 300 watt solar powered lithium ion battery with enough power to inflate an air mattress, charge a phone or two, and power an LED light strip for the night. It can even power the string lights in the fenced area. You'll need to unfurl the solar panel (included) upon arrival to get some juice for the night. There is also a small rocket stove, stored in the Quonset, that you can use for cooking with but only do so outside and away from the Quonset. If you arrive right at check in and it's a sunny day, plug in the solar panel to the back of the charger and you'll have juice through the night to power a laptop while charging a phone and still power the included USB LED lights. There's a picnic table with a wind-worn umbrella to enjoy your camp meals with friends, or a solid place to park yourself and your sketch pad or laptop, to dream big. The tranquility of El Primo still brings me joy whenever I sit inside the Quonset and stare out toward the western snow-capped mountains. You'll also see such a density of stars and you'd swear you can see the gas clouds of the milky way. In the day, the sky is usually blue and always enormous. The moon at times will be so bright, you can read a book under it. The sunsets are stunning and the sunrises turn the foothills pink. If you're lucky (and into military aircraft), our largest neighbor, the Marine Corp. Air Ground Combat Center, will be running ops the night of your stay. No worries, the battlefield is beyond the mountains to the east. It's very hot at night in the summer months and in the winter months it will get cold. It will be very windy throughout the year (I've clocked 24 mph with the wind speed meter kept in the Quonset). Yet, with the right attitude, preparation and gear, it's awesome all year round. I hope you think so too. This is also a great place to practice 'boketto' -- 360 degrees of pure vastness. Unplug and become unplugged. The loo is a single wall outhouse (a single panel of corrugated steel fencing) and a bucket toilet.  Toilet paper and bucket liners are inside the Quonset on the left side of the back wall.  One heavy duty garbage bag is inside the Quonset near the Rabbit art. Use one of those for your entire stay and take it with you. And pack your poo and take it with you, please. Please respect my neighbors, the land & leave no trace. Have an awesome stay.

El Primo Quonset Camping
Desert Quonset camping
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Quonset. The site is quiet and secluded but not far from Joshua Tree NP and 29 palms. It's also a great deal for the area. Richard is communicative and very knowledgeable about the area in general.

El Primo Quonset Camping
Richard's site was great and had everything we needed! We loved the hangout area next to the firepit with the hanging string lights. Richard was very hospitable and provided us with a portable shower when his shower was unavailable. We will definitely come back another time!

El Primo Quonset Camping
Art Hideout outside of Joshua Tree
Open land, cool shelter. I enjoyed staying on Richard’s land. It is not far from Joshua Tree, though staying off the road and on site proved to bring much needed rest and reflection. Artful placement of sleep and hangout areas frame the desert.

El Primo Quonset Camping
There’s something quite freeing about staying at this location. The neighbors are far enough away to feel like you have your own space. It’s a peaceful, expansive landscape out here. A good place to recenter yourself. There’s a nice wind barrier around the fire pit if it happens to be windy while you’re there. There’s also an open-air shower you can rinse off at the end of the day. The tub is a real winner here too. It’s perfect for taking a quick dip at the end of a hot summer day. The Quonset is quite cozy inside, with some nice rugs underneath your feet. Just bring your own bedding to complete the setup. It gets a bit toasty in there during the warm days, so I’d suggest opening the doors once you get there to cool it down a little bit.

El Primo Quonset Camping
Coziest spot in the desert
Absolutely loved this spot here. The spot itself was so cozy and perfect for me and my friend. Would definitely recommend staying here with your friends! The running water was also a major plus!

El Primo Quonset Camping
Amazing location with amazing view
I go camping A LOT and this has definitely landed on my favorite spots list. Super private but close enough to a paved road that i felt safe camping alone. I did a solo trip and was the only one on the campus that weekend. Lots to see nearby. There was also cell service so I felt safe and Richard was super responsive to questions. Caught the sunset in the outdoor bath and pitch a chair to catch the sunrise across the mountains. There was absolutely no obstructions. I’ll be back soon and excited to share this wonderful place with loved ones next time
