Views and solitude at a site untouched by time, a true Sierra backcountry experience.

Oakley Ridge is a private nature preserve of fragrant sage, scrub oak, blue oak, and digger pine that supports diverse wildlife from horned lizards, butterflies and numerous insects, to raptors, bobcats, foxes, mule deer and black bears.

CAUTION! A vehicle with 4WD or AWD --  and EXPERIENCE DRIVING OFF-ROAD -- are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The last 5 miles are steep and not paved. Vehicles without extra ground clearance will bottom out, and most pickups cannot get enough traction. If you get stuck, AAA will not tow a vehicle on this road. SAFETY FIRST! If you start up the road, and find that it is not wise to continue, I will honor your CANCELLATION.

Choose your own camp site anywhere on the 80 acres. I’ll be handy, but only if you need me. Otherwise, you probably won’t see anyone during your stay.

Located near the crest of the southern Sierra Nevada mountains at an elevation over 5,000 feet. Spectacular views of the Walker Basin, winding Caliente Creek canyon, and giant boulders protruding from rugged granite hillsides.

The elevation and distance from urban areas provide a spectacular night sky view, with wide field and deep sky imaging capability. For photographers, the evening light is exceptional. Miles of hiking, including access to the world-class Pacific Crest Trail.

Pet the horses. Amalia, born wild in Nevada, still hardly knows what a fence is. She roams free at Oakley Ridge and the adjacent public BLM lands with her herd sister, Dot. They get along fine with children and dogs.

Responsible off-roading, with access to the national forest.

All this within 3.5 hours of Los Angeles, 2 hours of Bakersfield or Lake Isabella.

Sandy has a gorgeous plot of land bordering BLM forest in the southern tip of the Sierra Nevada. Very remote and quiet, and just a 45-minute hike to the Pacific Crest Trail. Ideal for backpackers and campers looking to avoid all the overcrowded weekend spots. We spent a couple nights camping and day-hiked the PCT. Gorgeous weather, spectacular views, stunning sunsets and stargazing, and a warm, wonderful host.

The site was better than I’d imagined! I booked this site to avoid the busy camping holiday and there was no better way to avoid those crowds. It was very private, extremely quiet, the perfect getaway. I look forward to going back again. Sandy was a wonderful host, very attentive, informative and kind. I look forward to visiting her again in the near future. Thank you sandy!

Loren, you and your party were ideal campers! Even though Oakley Ridge is a primitive site, I could barely find a footprint! It gave me a lot of satisfaction to have you folks. When I heard a little snatch of laughter on the breeze, I knew I was doing the right thing to share my place with folks like you who really care about nature! P.S. Your dog Rosie stole my heart!

Oakley Ridge Nature Preserve is an amazing getaway, and Sandy is an excellent host. If you are looking for a unique off the grid camping destination, this is a great option. It’s out there and worth every mile. The directions and logistics were perfect and Sandy was there to greet us and give us the lay of the land when we arrived. The horses were definitely the highlight for my two boys - they are very sweet and well mannered (the horses, not necessarily my boys!). The views are simply amazing and the wilderness endless. As Sandy notes, this is primitive camping not glamping, but you’ll be rewarded with amazing views, hiking, seclusion and wildlife. Thanks Sandy for sharing!

Sandy is absolutely marvelous. Very kind, helpful and knowledgeable about her natural surroundings. The road leading up to her site is recommended for a 4 wheel drive vehicle. A 2 wheel drive vehicle should make it, too. The trail is not as challenging as described.
Our children especially had a wonderful time with Sandy’s horses. The two horses live wild and free on her property, but are very tame and our daughters were able to ride them. Sandy shared a lot of horse knowledge with the children and happily engaged with them.
We were able to go on beautiful hikes directly from her property and truly enjoyed our time completely off the beaten path in the great outdoors. It’s a very special experience!

Oakley Ridge is 80 acres of a oak scrub and sage brush on a ridge (~5400 ft) of the Piute Mountains well off the beaten path; in fact, it's 5 miles up a winding improved dirt road which I made with my BMW X3 with no issues. It's a nature preserve with lots of critters around including ticks (Sandy warned us about ticks). Sandy has made some upgrades including a "luggable loo" which is a surprisingly brilliant invention. Sandy is a friendly welcoming accommodating host. We will definitely re-visit. We tried beating a path to the PCT but got within 500 feet and turned around when he came to a wall of scrub.

Matthew and his family were a pleasure to host -- resourceful, avid hikers, appreciative of nature, skilled in outdoor navigation, cheerful, hardy, and good company. One of the highlights for me was watching the youngster's eyes fill with excitement and delight when she got on a horse for the first time. I hope our paths cross again!
