2019 DATES OPENING SOON! -- The Terrapin Tent at Moontower Ranch is a glamping/canvas tent nestled in the middle of a 5-acre property in Morongo Valley, CA. Your campsite comes with your own gas grill and picnic table, and it's steps away from a clean, private outhouse. Located about 20 minutes from both Palm Springs and Joshua Tree National Park, the Terrapin Tent makes for a convenient, elevated camping experience in the high desert. The perfect place to let your inspiration flow.
The tent includes a queen-size bed with fresh linens, battery-powered lanterns, books, and extra blankets. The campsite also has two hammocks and an outdoor fireplace (weather permitting). The campsite DOES NOT have electricity, running water, or wifi. There is a spigot for well water near the main house that guests are welcome to use to fill up bottles for the campsite.
There are a lot of fantastic vacation rentals in the high desert. The Terrapin Tent was designed for people looking to unplug, relax, and enjoy the great outdoors. We've tried to provide as many comforts as we can and hope it allows our guests to pack a little lighter and not stress about finding a campsite in the park. We encourage our guests to plan for their stay like they would a camping trip; don't forget your cooler, food, water, and sleeping bags/blankets for chillier nights.
WINTER WEATHER DISCLAIMER: While winter is one of the most beautiful times of year out in the high desert, the weather can also shift pretty dramatically. It can be in the 70s and sunny or in the 30s and very windy. We ask that you please plan for your stay like a camping trip and keep an eye on the forecast to be sure you're prepared for the temperature and will be comfortable during your stay. Since there is no power in the tent, there are no heaters for cold nights. We provide extra blankets for these nights but encourage you to have blankets or sleeping bags as well.
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS: We live in a homestead cabin on the property and will give you a tour of the campsite and grounds upon your arrival. We're available to answer any questions you may have during your stay, but will otherwise leave you to enjoy your stay. Check in is between 2pm and 6pm on your day of arrival. Please arrive before dark so we can show you around. No late check ins will be accepted without prior approval.
We've fallen in love with the desert and we hope that whether you're searching out everything Joshua Tree has to offer, or staying near the tent for some R&R, you'll have everything you need at the Terrapin Tent and you'll come to love the desert as much as we do!

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Terrapin Tent is a MUST if you are planning to stay close to Joshua Tree or need a desert getaway. Rudy and Elizabeth were amazing hosts and have done such an amazing job creating a wonderful space for guests to enjoy. Amenities such as a BBQ grill, chairs, firepit, linens, water, tables, and horseshoe area all provided! Not to mention the bedding was some of the softest and comfiest I had ever been on!
Rudy was quick to respond and so easygoing. The property is en route to Joshua Tree (about half an hour) but plan to bring your own wood for fires. There is not a ton to do immediately in the area, but it is a great place to relax and enjoy the desert scenery. Star gazing is a must at night, but keep in mind it is a desert so watch out for the heat and cacti!
All in all, such a pleasant overall experience - would recommend to everyone!!
Terrapin Tent was perfect. The tent itself is adorable - so well furnished and decorated with cozy blankets and a comfortable bed. The details of the camp itself were great, including nice hammocks, a fire pit, chairs for reading and a covered picnic table & grill (including grilling utensils!). The host Rudy was so friendly and helpful, and very easy to communicate with. We had a great stay at the Terrapin Tent and would absolutely recommend it. We look forward to booking again!
What a lovely campsite! Rudy & his fiancee have put a lot of love and effort into making Terrapin Tent comfortable & welcoming. The bed is incredibly comfortable, with plenty of blankets to keep warm. They have some basic kitchen supplies available to use with the gas grill & a water spigot by their house, with fresh, clean water to fill up jugs. There are plenty of comfortable places to hang out and relax - hammocks, chairs, a fire pit, & a picnic table And the outhouse actually smells nice!
Rudy was very friendly & gave us a brief tour upon our arrival. He was available via phone or Hipcamp message & highly responsive, although he gave us as much space & privacy as we desired.
We had a great stay & will absolutely come again!
We loved our stay here! We had everything we could need and more. Enjoyed napping in the hammock, relaxing by the fire, and dozing in the comfy bed. It was our first time camping in the desert, and it was an amazing experience. Highly recommend.
Such an amazing little spot! The host was super friendly and helpful. We stayed the night, went to Joshua Tree National Park during the day then came back to the tent for dinner, s’mores, and stargazing! It was our first time camping and we loved that it was still close enough to town to feel safe but definitely still private and cozy! Would definitely recommend.
We had a great experience at Moontower Ranch. Elizabeth and Rudy have truly built a great site to experience the desert tranquility with many premium conveniences.
They make it so easy to enjoy camping without having to lug around heavy or bulky items like a tent, air mattresses, stoves, etc. You pretty much just need to pack for a regular hotel stay, add some food to grill and drinks to imbibe, and you are set. Pretty much everything is provided!
Easy, beautiful, relaxing. Moontower Ranch is Hipcamp at it's best!
