CAMPOUT FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY: SATURDAY AUGUST 10 2019 (One night! ALSO EID -AL-ADHA ) Guests wishing to stay on site at Mendocino Magic for the weekend should book one of our other campsites listed on hipcamp for the dates of their stay.
The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24. It peaks this year on the night of August 12 and the morning of August 13. The nearly full moon will block out most of the fainter meteors this year, but the Perseids are so bright and numerous that it could still be a good show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, but can appear anywhere in the sky. Perseid's Meteor Shower will be taking place over the Pacific Northwestern United States. Mendocino Magic will host campers in "open air camping" with no tents, just laying out on tarps under the stars for maximized view. We will have an astronomer with telescope and provide a tea service for this large annual gathering of people who are welcomed to come camp with us. Please no tents, no dogs or other pets (service dogs with paperwork okay on leash). There are facilities for cooking at the lanai but at the Knoll please prepare picnic style foods only (without need for any cook stoves).
Arrive at 3000 Branscomb Road Laytonville CA 95454 and check in at the front gate. Park in our parking lot (kudos for carpooling!) then hop on a shuttle with your group and your gear to Knommi's knoll. There will be many tarps for small groups of up to 4 people. We request visitors for this one night engagement DO NOT bring tents, just headlamps, water bottles to refill, a refillable mug for hot water and tea, your sleeping bag and sleeping pad. Guests will pack their gear into trucks for the 1.5 miles up to NOMMI's KNOLL Camp. At the drop off point at the knoll, feel free to grab a tarp and a blanket or two for optimal comfort, walk your group and gear to the knoll (approximately 500 feet on a grassy pathway) pick your own location for your tarp(s) and set up for a night of starfilled bliss as the sun goes down. We ask guests not to bring tents to the knoll so they can maximize visibility of the night sky and not obstruct the views of other guests. Please do not bring dogs to this event.
NOMMI'S KNOLL Camp: The highest camp at Mendocino Magic sits on a hilltop above the reservoir with crisp private skies full of stars at night. This is a gradual 20 minute hike up a mountain via a fire road from the lanai on the Buddha Canyon Trail loop hike.
The hike is worth it. Campers have a completely flat terrain dotted with manzanita brush and madrone trees, perfect for an isolated getaway. For Perseid's Meteor Shower, please prepare for a night under the stars by packing layers for chilly nights, and just your sleeping bag and pad (no tents).

The vibe at Perseid's Meteor Shower Campout III
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Watching the meteor shower at Mendocino Magic was such a great experience. Everything from pre-event communications to the setup of the actual event was so clear and organized. I could not have asked for a better experience!
I will definitely be coming back and recommending others to come here as well.
Perseid's Meteor Shower Campout was awesome - highly recommended! Beautiful spot on top of the mountain; tarps were very useful; reservoir was fun to hang out at all day – was exactly what I expected. Looking forward to coming back again!
Great experience! We swam in the lake prior to sundown and the night sky was nothing short of amazing. Bringing bug spray and sunscreen is a must. Bringing a thermos with a hot drink would be good great as well. Thank you!!!
I went for the Perseid Meteor Shower viewing. We got there early and claimed our tarp and then went for a swim in the reservoir which was really fun as it was pretty warm. We then ate dinner and waited for the show on the hill, Mendocino had a beautiful view of the sky, we even saw the Milky Way! The moon made an appearance around 1am but the meteor shower was still fun to watch. Make sure you pack light and bring bug spray. Overall, I'd def recommend this place and plan to do it again next year!
