Bring your family & friends so you all can camp together under the stars in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. This 50-acre family-owned property is located in the heart of Apple Hill. There are two streams that run through it, with a hill that separates them. It is a working Christmas tree farm that was started in the 1960s and now has many trees that are too big to fit in anyone's home but provide an unbelievable canopy for some of our campsites. About 1/3 of it is covered in a pine forest (with secluded campsites) with the balance being Christmas trees, Manzanita brush, Madrone trees, and open areas for larger group campers. There are trails throughout the property for visitors to enjoy. There is an Apple Farm across the street that makes the best donuts in Apple Hill! Less than a mile away is a farm brewery and there are wineries throughout the area. There is also a large lake nearby that is a favorite for local kayak and canoe enthusiasts (and some who enjoy fishing) since most non-locals don't know it exists.

Please see the Madrone Tree Hill listing for more details on what's here and nearby!!!

Two group sites have been created for two different types of camping experiences.  (TWO-night minimum stay.)  The first is a large open area (bring your RV's and/or shade covers) that is on the south end of the property. It includes a large level area, a fire ring*, it's own [RV] parking area, and even has a stage if you want to get really creative! (There is an additional fee for usage of the stage - contact me for details.) The second area is at the top of the hill in the forest. This is a more tranquil site since it is among the pine & Madrone trees and hidden away. A campfire may be allowed, depending on the time of year and fire size. Vehicles can load & unload in this area, but it is recommended that they be parked in the parking area about 50 yards away.  (Up to 4 vehicles may remain parked in this site - #2.)

Both sites have rope lights that can be connected to a generator and will illuminate the center of the group site area.  If you want to uses these, please either bring a generator or add a generator rental to your booking.

NOTE: We have reduced the site price as we are no longer including a "reserved" restroom in the site.  RV groups usually do not need these and so we have now made this optional.  PLEASE CONSIDER RENTING A PORTABLE RESTROOM for your group if you are TENT CAMPING with more than 12 people or would like the convenience of having your own "reserved" restroom.

*NOTE: Open campfires are strictly prohibited during the summer months. Warming fires may be permitted if in a fully enclose fire pit (with a mesh top) AND is in an area cleared of flammable vegetation and overhanging tree branches AND water is nearby.

Be sure to bring flashlights and lanterns, it can get pretty dark at night!

I booked the group site for my 30th birthday and it was PERFECT! Gordon was a superb host and a great communicator who was prompt to answer my million questions before and during my stay. He was also gracious enough to wait for me and my friends' arrival, even though we had shown up 4 hours late than anticipated. The site itself was beautiful, secluded, well maintained, and quite spacious with plenty of shade from the trees. The private porta potty with a washing sink next to it was a nice touch. There were cute things to do nearby like visit the apple orchard and breweries, which were in walking distance. My friends went to the lake in the early morning and caught some trout. Overall, all of us had an excellent time and I would absolutely book this site again. The only feedback for improvement would be that the PDF packet Gordon sent wasn't super clear on the group site location (maybe some signage?). A few of my friends got confused. Not a big deal though. I couldn't have asked for a better place to have my birthday.

Such an awesome, secluded, and large group site. Perfect spot for a fun weekend. We did a birthday party and Gordon was incredible and helpful both before, during, and after the event.

This is a great place to camp. We stayed in the Group Site #2 with a bunch of tents and site #12 with our RV. The campground is very well organized and we had everything we need for our group. The camp fires, grills, grilling tools, sink, water, ports potty--all were in excellent condition. Gordon is very communicative and helpful. The trails around the grounds are fun and well-groomed. Even my toddler could walk them without trouble. The group site was very private and quiet, yet we could drive right up to drop off stuff--very convenient. Also, it is a very quick drive from the SF Bay Area--just 2 hours to get there. All the activities nearby is also a perk. The experience of being in the woods but close to civilization was perfect. I/we highly recommend Madrone Tree Hill.

Group #2 campsite was awesome! I camped with a group of 12 friends and the site was huge. We had plenty of space to park our cards, set up our tents, hammocks, campfire, space to eat and with plenty of room to spare. The porta potty was equipped with toilet paper and hand sanitizer to keep things clean. Gordon was very responsive to my questions beforehand and even stopped by to say hello on our first night. We drove to the top of Slab Creek Reservoir and enjoyed a nice swim without too many people around - highly recommend!

Perfect group site for camping

The group site was perfect for a large camping group. It usually fits 40, so at the COVID restricted 20 you have more than enough space to adhere to social distancing. There is a clean porta-potty on site with soap, running water and hand sanitizer.

A few things to note:
- There are beautiful lights strung up over the picnic tables, but you will need to bring your own power to turn them on. This was not specified on the listing.
- The listing notes that Slab Creek Reservoir is only 4 miles away, but there is a locked gate that prohibits you from taking that route. The host only told us this after we made the booking. Instead you have to drive 30mins to get a section of the reservoir for swimming. This should be updated on the listing, as getting to the reservoir is not as easy as initially described.
- Quite time is at 9:30pm and I don't think that was noted on the original listing. So if you're rowdy, that's something to consider. That being said, the Group Site is tucked away the back and you can make a bit more noise if you have cool neighbors.
- Slab Creek Reservoir water is FREEZING cold. No exaggeration.
- Apple Barrel Pizza is 1mi away and is awesome! They don't deliver to the campsite though.

As other reviews have stated, Madrone Tree Hill group camp was a great experience. We stayed in group site #1 which was well equipped with tables, BBQ, fire pit, and there were several water spigots. Our group of 23 people with 6 tents and one good sized RV had plenty of space. The kids really enjoyed the stage area and exploring the woods around the site. We did a day trip to Sky Park Reservoir to escape the heat and cool off in the lake. Gordon, the host, was available and stopped by each evening but wasn’t overly in our business. The site isn’t cheap, but it was overall a pleasant and enjoyable trip.

HOST:
Gordon was extremely helpful, patient & kind. Apparently my husband and I aren't very good at directions, so we drove straight toward a beaten path. Our car got stuck & Gordon was quick to respond when he called & he came to the rescue! If I were him, I would have been frustrated but he dealt with it well. He is quick to respond when booking the site & while at the site.

SITE:
7 of us stayed at the Group 2 camp site & let's just say, we definitely plan to return! Private group site with a sink station & portable toilet. The toilet was immaculate upon arrival (hehe) & had a urinal, toilet seat covers, and toilet paper. The sink had sanitizer, hand soap, & dish soap. The site was very spacious & there were big picnic tables available. We rented a generator to turn on the string lights (highly recommend bc they add a nice touch). We loved the space & the privacy.

ADDITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
- we saw the milky way 2 nights in a row!
- clean site
- hiking trails surrounding the site
- firepit available
- surrounded by so many trees
- didn't hear other campsites

Sucks we came in during the red flag. Group site #1 has a huge Bon fire pit. Plenty of parking, a stage, lights (that u need a generator to operate), running water, 2-3 min drive (no traffic) to high hill ranch, walking distance to rainbow, cool trails. 9:30 is quiet time. Neighbors will hate. AT&T gave me one bar LTE. You have to take your own trash home! Just remember if your leaving Sunday you will get caught up in the Tahoe traffic on the way home.
