We were very excited about our trip to Joshua Tree and staying at Lovelight. There were a few disappointing factors though that lead to a less-than-expected visit. The property is large and it was neat to see that the different campsites were unique and set up with firepits, chairs and sometimes a table. Some sites are very close to each other, as far as being able to hear full conversations and especially when most people are trying to sleep. The host gave us the choice of where to stay, and luckily put us way in the back facing away from everyone with a wind shelter maintaining privacy. But this was also where a lot of the trash from the property was kept. The outdoor kitchen, outhouse, and shower are nice features. The shower is still not necessarily private, there are only sheer blankets covering you so most light during the day will reveal you. The 5 dogs on the property are friendly, but two of them kept peeing on our tents and bags which was very annoying. The outdoor pool was drained while we were there over Thanksgiving, not sure why. The other really unfortunate thing about this place is the noise at night! If you are an easy camping sleeper you probably won't be bothered. But the noises that kept us up all night were very loud. The wild dogs in the neighborhoods (and even some of this property's dogs) were howling constantly, and there's a chicken farm of some sort nearby that had the chickens making so much noise and a rooster cook-a-doodling all through the night (it's odd that they don't make any noise during the day, just at night). I didn't read any reviews with this complaint so I'm not sure if it was a rare instance, but it sure was a damper on the trip to try to enjoy Joshua Tree without sleep. The last thing is that the two entrances to Joshua Tree (north and south) are both at least 45min from the campsite. Something to consider when planning your day. I would not recommend this place to everyone. I really dislike giving not fully positive reviews, but these things needed to be stated so that you have a more realistic impression of what your stay will be like here.

What a unique getaway! I wasn't quite sure what to expect from my first Hipcamp experience but was pleasantly surprised! The property owners are very laid-back and greeted us when we arrived. They have 3 friendly dogs who ran and chased balls with our 2 dogs for our entire stay. There is so much to explore on the property that just walking around it kept us busy. Be sure to bring your swimsuit to take a dip in their small above-ground pool and a blanket to enjoy the beautiful night sky atop the deck. Running water, a shower, swing-set, and a small outdoor food prep area with sink were a nice change from the traditional campsite. We pitched our tent under the shade of an old tree in the Buddha Lounge outdoor area, which was perfect to shield us from the hot desert sun. Another group set up their tent near the palapa, an underground hut, and enjoyed their evening under the stars. The charm is indescribable, but if you're looking for a unique camping experience come with an open mind and you'll enjoy this little gem.

First, Julie was a truly wonderful host and she did everything she could to provide us with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The bathroom was a nice, clean, enclosed facility; the kitchen was under a roof and included access to appliances, propane, a pizza oven, running water and plenty of dishes and cookware; there was a shower, but I would not have used it. It was hard to find a bad review of this place and the photos made it look like a unique desert oasis.

However, I would be doing everyone a disservice if I did not mention the CONS because they are important and they make me VERY hesitant to ever try this type of camping experience again. 1. There are a lot of dogs roaming the property and they don't leave us alone. (We had a hard time trying to squeeze in a moment to play fetch with our own dog because as soon as we would throw the ball, another dog would run and get it and our dog would just run back to us). I was afraid to set up our tent on the ground because I knew it would get peed on because the dogs were all peeing all over everything on the property, I later found this exact complaint from another review...luckily, we were able to set up on top of the roof of the shower structure. 2. There is an awful lot of trash piled up around the property. Not actual garbage, but just piles of broken things, a car without doors, random structures filled with clutter. It felt like anything BUT an oasis. It was very strange and oddly claustrophobic for a huge, mostly open property. I was glad we were the only ones there (well, there were other RVs on the property- not pictured, of course, but we were the only tent campers and told we had the place to ourselves) because it would have been even stranger to be here with other campers- and if we were not able to set up camp on the roof, I don't know that we would have been able to stay. Getting covered in dog piss is a deal breaker for me. 3. The property is 45 min to an hour from each Joshua Tree entrance. I blame myself for bad planing but when I did a search for "camping/Joshua Tree/dogs allowed" this was one of the top options, and looking at a map, it's technically on top of Joshua Tree itself and I just think that this should be mentioned. 4. The photos look NOTHING like the actual place. With the right lighting and the right lens, I can make my tiny L.A. studio apartment look like Buckingham Palace...it makes me not want to trust the other reviews and photos from hipcamp.

Super nice place and hosts. You can camp anywhere and use everything, we even made a barbecue and watched the stars on a bed on the rooftop. Little negative point: there is no curtain to the outside shower so no one is using it, and everyone is doing a little wash using the sink of the bathroom instead. It makes a line at the bathroom in the morning because of that and that's a pity cause the shower looked actually nice!

Great location, great hosts. We got rained out which is unusual for the desert but fortunately they had an outdoor kitchen under a shelter and also a shelter to put the tent out of the rain.

Nice large property with plenty of privacy if you're looking for it. Pool, several shaded areas and access to shower & toilet. Property owners couldn't be more hospitable!
