Please note that there is poison oak on the land. The main trails and campsites are free of it but it's nature and some could pop up in areas that have been cleared. If you know what it is you can safely stay out of it.

We have an outdoor kitchen but it is only available to campers for water. During these pandemic times we can't allow you to use it.

I came to Laytonville Ecovillage expecting your run of the mill, traditional camping experience. What I ended up experiencing was so much more. The hosts have developed the ecovillage with a focus on community and sustainability. It's clear from a short conversation with the hosts just how much they care about the land. I learned so much about permaculture during my short stay, and have been truly inspired by the land owners.

It's important to highlight that this is a green community in the making. Visiting the ecovillage will allow you to see how a community of this sort is developed. If you become particularly interested in learning more, they offer workshops and work trades (separate from Hipcamp.)

The ecovillage is located in California’s Mendocino county, which is a very rural area far from the bustle of the city. We visited nearby Cahto Peak at the recommendation of our host, Dan. The peak was absolutely amazing — 360 degree views of the surrounding hills, and the ocean in the distance. You can drive up almost to the top of the peak, which is a perk for some.

I'd recommend this site to anyone who has an interest in permaculture. Come to Laytonville to learn, to relax, to soak in the beautiful surroundings. You'll leave with a deep appreciation for what they are building here.

Dan (the host) was very friendly. The campsites are basic but everything you need. The toilet is not a flush toilet, but it is clean and odor-free. We car-camped and had the camping area to ourselves, it was peaceful and private. We didn't have time to explore much around the area, so I can't comment on activities and things to do, but we saw beautiful scenery nearby.

This campsite was such a gem to find! We stopped on our way to Humboldt Redwoods State Park and had the whole campground to ourselves. In the morning we loved the beautiful outdoor shower (nearly made the whole trip worth it!) and outdoor kitchen. Dan was very welcoming and provided all the information we needed. I would definitely recommend this place!

Dan is a warm and welcoming host who strives to build a thriving community and ecovillage on his land. He has a number of work-share folks staying on the property, and a friendly French family was there helping him with some farming/gardening as a part of a trip to spend some time in the U.S. He has enormous respect for the earth and for people, and wants to create a little village where both can prosper in tandem. We got in around 7pm and set up our tents and then ate dinner by our campsite, but then walked back down to the outdoor kitchen a little later where Dan and his group had a campfire going. We shared our smores and had a nice evening.

Dan totally gets it!

I've stayed at Hipcamps from California to the Canadian border.

Not all Hipcamps are created equal.

Dan's Laytonville Ecovillage captures the essence of a true Hipcamp. Like most true Hipcamps it continues to be a work in progress which makes it all that much more interesting. I started coming to Laytonville back in the Earthdance days and it continues to hold a certain fascination for me. Dan's place screams out as a place to gather and is perfectly located for access to a number of places including Dos Rios, Covelo, Branscomb and Leggett. You won't find a better shower anywhere, the fresh air commissary is set up for easy use and comfortable dining.

This is a great value!

I'm looking forward to when Dan will be hosting events.

Anyone with an interest in sustainability and/or permaculture is likely to enjoy camping here. You stay on a working permaculture property including a solar powered shower and outdoor kitchen. We had a great stay and the property was very interesting to learn about. Our host Dan was friendly, knowledgeable, generous and very gracious with our son. Temperatures in July were pleasant and moderate. We did find that all the local attractions were 40+ minutes away, which was more than we would have preferrexd to drive. However all of them - the coast and Ft Bragg, the Skunk train, Vichy springs, the de Angelo center - were beautiful days out.

Dan, my host, and Cameron, the caretaker, were both incredibly kind and welcoming. Dan is building a great eco space for folks to gather and create community.
