This place is truly one of a kind. The pygmy oaks are unique to this area and the host Bryce has built a beautiful spot incorporating the mystical trees. With the Elfin Forest right behind the campsite, there’s totally Lord of the Rings vibes in this area. To get to the campsites you pass through the Rivendell gate and each campsite is named after Lord of the Rings regions.

When we arrived Bryce showed us to the campsite and was so helpful in making sure we had everything we needed to be nice and cozy in our campsite. We took a couple of trips to get everything to the campsite, there’s a little wagon available to assist in the unloading process :)

There are a couple of different grill options to use ( standard coal grill or the wood-burning Santa Maria grill) I was curious about the Santa Maria one, so we ended up grilling our marinated steak and veggies on that one. Super yummy dinner!
After dinner, we sat around the gas-powered fire pit and chatted for hours while the fire kept us warm. Since it’s so close to the coast you may get some coastal mist, so make you sure you have everything covered or inside your tent if you want to keep it dry overnight!

I was definitely impressed with the bathroom amenities as they installed a touch-less sink faucet (definitely helps with covid safety) and a heated outdoor shower.

I would definitely recommend this spot if you’re looking for a unique camping experience with a walking trail right by your campsite!

Getting the Santa Maria grill fired up. Grilling our steak and veggies.Make sure to bring your own lighting on this site. The mystical pygmy oak covering makes this a truly one of a kind campsite.

The owner Bryce was great host. He checked on us throughout our visit. Everything exceeded our expectations. The spot under the oaks was perfect for our tent. We had a nice fire and the ambiance was amazing. We are already planning our next return trip. An A+ site and host.

This was was our first Hipcamp experience and it set the bar extremely high!! My boyfriend and I went for Fourth of July weekend and had a much needed relaxing getaway.

The campsite was an absolute dream come true. Very private, large area with many options for tent placement, beautiful surroundings of the Elfin forest, and amazing views of the mountains and back bay. We highly recommend setting up your tent in the Shire, which is shaded by the oak trees. The Rhun site is excellent for cooking and campfire! We loved the LOTR touches as well as the calming water feature.

The site is an easy and scenic 10 minute drive to Morro Bay. The generous hosts provide both a charcoal and a Santa Maria style grill. We loved the Santa Maria grill so much that we're looking into getting one for ourselves :) That being said, Morro bay and Los Osos both have great restaurants close to the site. Grocery stores and coffee shops are also close by.

Another impressive amenity was the bathroom, hot shower and kitchen sink area. All equipped with touch-free faucets and very clean!! The outdoor shower was so nice and even had an instant water heater.

We greatly enjoyed the Elfin Forest preserve boardwalk, about a mile loop of pygmy oaks and other native plants along with stunning views of the bay and Morro Rock. We mostly enjoyed going to the beach at Morro Rock but there is so much to do that we have to come back! Hiking, kayaking, fishing, exploring, all in the hidden gem that is the central coast of California.

Perhaps the most surprising part of our trip was the ferocious orange beast that guarded the site.. Cheetoh the camp cat! Cheetoh is easily the coolest and sweetest cat I've ever met. He makes for a great welcoming committee and provides great customer service checking in throughout your stay :) The hosts were so welcoming and kind. Bryce and his wife were really helpful and made sure we had the best stay. They even came back in the middle of their fireworks show to help us with the lights!! Thank you so much!! We will most definitely be returning soon.

From its location in the Elfin Forest to its stunning mountain views to the unbelievably gracious hosts themselves, words can't express what absolutely great time my family had at Rivendell.

From the minute you arrive on the camp site, you can tell Bryce and his family took due care in making it as perfect as possible. The site comes equipped with multiple grills, potable water, power receptacles and a newly-built "outhouse" with a wonderful, private outdoor shower.

We had three children in our group (12, 6 and 4) and they thoroughly enjoyed running around, climbing trees, playing in the brier patch and talking a beautiful scenic walk in the Elfin Forest.

Words can not express how magical Rivendell is and how much we are looking forward to going back.

Special thank you to Bryce and his entire family. They made our trip even more special!

An amazing experience at Rivendell! Our hosts were lovely and pleasant- available if we needed them but not intrusive at all. The space was perfect for our group- with three young kids the twinkle-lit tree area transformed to a magical spot, perfect to crawl around and explore. Steps away from the Elfin Forest, we were able to easily walk to our next adventure- and the views were stunning! The campground had a great bathroom/kitchen/shower set up which feels luxurious for avid campers and a very comfortable accommodation for the novice campers who like a little “glamping”! Close to State Parks, beaches, the town (for groceries and supplies). We can’t wait to come back!
