The perfect mountain sanctuary
What an incredible weekend! Enjoyed every minute at the Pump House during our Idyllwild Camping Adventure. From the views of Lily Rock to the endless starry night sky to the charm of Idyllwild itself, this was the perfect sanctuary surrounded by natural beauty and wonder.
Blissful weekend of nature bathing
What a beautiful and totally secluded campsite only a short walk to the heart of the village of Idyllwild. Stephen was so nice and gracious throughout our stay. He’s also a great local guide and historian who gave tips for nearby hikes, sights and restaurants. Stephen met us at his gate to ensure we could travel safely back his gravel road and that we knew about all the amenities his PumpHouse had to offer (which were many). We loved the long bar and bench picnic area, umbrellas, grill, lounging furniture and outdoor shower. Our mornings were filled with the sounds of chirping mountain chickadees and our evenings watching the deer with starry skies. This is glamping at its finest.
Just frickin' fabulous !
NO - - - -repeat - - - NO noise! Nothing but wild wilderness to look upon. I NOT NOT live for ANY device -re: computer, laptop, phone, and reception for these devices is THANKFULLY very limited. I booked this get away to gain respite from the pace I MUST perform at my job. I work for a MAJOR airline and it is VERY stressful at work. I will go back to this location again and AGAIN!
Far beyond our expectations!
Stephen truly went above and beyond for our stay on his private property. Upon our arrival, he met us down the road to guide us to the “Pumphouse.”
He has built a completely off-grid little oasis at the base of Taquitz Peak.
Once getting up to the property (a short drive from the paved roads of Idyllwild), he showed us around and thoroughly explained all of the amenities. He also provided awesome recommendations for food in town as well as his favorite hikes. Such a gracious and welcoming soul!
The house structure is his personal space that he uses when the campsites are not being rented. There are two different campsites set up on the property - we reserved the option closest to the Pumphouse.
The shared space surrounding the Pumphouse features an outdoor shower (with hot water!), a compost toilet if you prefer over woods, a bar, an amazing grill and a smoker! There’s also a small table with bistro chairs . We brought our own chairs but there was a comfy sun lounger provided. Between the bar and the bistro table, we had plentiful eating space.
There are no fires allowed in the area for safety reasons but he has the property setup with solar powered lights - and outdoor string lights that have 2-3 hours of power.
Before going to bed, we turned off all the lights and experienced 15+ shooting stars! Upon waking in the morning and packaging up, we were able to choose from multiple hikes that were walking distance! There are also hikes on his property!
Our night at the Pumphouse was exactly the getaway we needed! We can’t wait to make a trip back!
Stephen was a great host! He was very hospitable and treated us like good friends. The site was nice and quiet and felt like we were far removed although, the town was a couple minutes drive and the site had running water and a gas grill making it really convenient.
Idyllwild hidden gem!
Hidden gem! 💎 Just beautiful!!! much needed last min appropriately social distanced getaway. We had an amazing time at the PumpHouse and will be back! Stephen was such a wonderful host!! Just an absolute sweetheart!.. super helpful, while still respecting privacy — he took the time out to meet us (even late into the evening due to unexpected delays) and made sure we found the road after dark — showed us the PH amenities and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay — the refreshing fresh water shower was a lifesaver in the heat wave!! (recommend looking at weather forecast as part of planning) . we were visited by baby owls 🦉 on the first night, the full moon through the trees was breathtaking. the land is close to town, yet feels super remote and private. guests at the other site also had access to the PH and we didn’t cross paths at all.. still felt very private. Stephen was always accessible and provided local tips, guidance and amenities as needed. we forgot our little camping stove for coffee, but luckily the fancy propane grill also has a gas burner on the side for boiling water for coffee in the mornings. felt like somewhere between glamping and full on camping. exactly what the dr ordered! can’t say enough (and don’t want to say too much so it stays a hidden gem ;) Overall 5 stars — highly recommend!!
Idyling in the wild @ the pumphouse
We camped at site 2 at the “Pumphouse” which was very large and very private. This is a gem of a site as it gives the feeling of being deep in the wilderness, when you are just on the outskirts of Idylwild. Extremely quiet and an incredible view of the moon rising over the opposite side of the mountains. Close to many trails & wilderness galore ... great for star gazing too! There is an option to use the spring water shower that is installed at the communal pump house, which we gladly did. Stephen was an excellent host, extremely helpful, courteous and great local knowledge ...
Amazing place to stay with friends. Particularly great if you might be new to camping since you get all the beauty of nature--stars, views, coyotes howling at night--and you are only a ten minute walk into town should you have forgotten something or just love the little town. The kitchen set up was super helpful and made it so easy to cook and enjoy yourself. Great spot.
