Sturtevant Camp was established in 1893 and is located, ONLY via hiking trails, 4.25 miles from Chantry Flat in the Angeles National Forest. The Retreat Cabin was originally built for short-term staff housing. It is still used in that capacity on occasion, but it also makes for a rental cabin that is more cozy than the group cabins. It has it’s own bathroom and kitchenette, with a propane refrigerator. All dishes, utensils and cooking items are provided. There are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with two pair of bunk beds, giving the cabin a sleeping capacity of six. The beds come with sheets, blankets, and pillows so sleeping bags are not needed. The front room has seating and a table with chairs.
This cabin sits among lush beds of periwinkle, and has ample flat space around it with a private picnic table. Barbecues are available on site, you just need to provide charcoal. Nearby is the game court, which can be set up for badminton, volleyball or croquet. Guests have access to the main lodge for the fireplace (wood provided) and other games. This is a wonderful location for a writer's retreat.

3/5 Stars Overall
I would recommend for Retreat Cabin to have full driving, parking and hiking directions to the cabin as well as a hike difficulty level and general time requirement listed! Took us 1 wrong turn and 3hrs on a fairly difficult hike with our weighted packs. It's fine if you're expecting it, but a bit of an obstacle if you're not! While our group had a great time, we got ended up doing some unplanned night hiking and creek crossings.
The cabin was great, but the gas (heater/stove) went out several times as well as the electricity, which was turned off at 8:40pm instead of 10pm as listed. If you're looking to go "glamping" this is not the place, but do plan a full weekend as there were lots of fun activities and great scenery at and along the way to the cabin that we missed out on.
Jack the cabin host was awesome and Deb the cabin coordinator wrote back quickly any time I reached out with questions!
Ok for couple. best in a group!
There was an unforeseen hiccup shortly after booking my Cabon Retreat. Deb contacted me immediately and proposed to move my group to Honeymoon Cottage. Unfortunately, this only houses 2 people so part of my group had to be uninvited to my bf's bday trip :( . Once there, the Camp host mentioned we could move to a larger cabin when she was unable to turn on the heater in our cabin! So, my group could have been accommodated afterall, but it was too late.
The hike in was harder than expected with a weighted pack, so be sure to research the trail. Mount Zion Loop trail goes directly through the camp, so there were hikers in and out all day, but still felt safe and was quiet enough.
My only complaint is that it would be nice if someone could clean the cabins. our cabin had what looked like mouse droppings on the floor and cobwebs everywhere. We're not fuzzy people, but it would be nice if it wasn't there...
The camp host was AWESOME! She was working her butt off the entire time, super friendly, informative and helpful. She really deserves the praise. Note that the zipline and the archery set up are both gone!
Sidenote: the Hipcamp support team is awesome!! <3
The bunk beds are not very comfortable but it beats tent camping for sure. The kitchenette and bathroom were great and the heat worked well. Overall a really great experience and a beautiful place. Our camp host, Danny, was also very friendly and helpful.
A total treat and total retreat.
It’s rustic. Cabins are very basic but it is awesome. Close to LA. Beautiful hike. Beautiful setting. Incredible range of activities at the camp. Great for kids. Great for a getaway. Easy camping with fresh drinkable water, hot showers, full service kitchen. I would highly recommend.
great camp experience for small group of people. everything is well maintained. it is a nice getaway which also close to the city. it's bit cold for December, we cover 5 blanket but still can't fall into sleep. but the dilemma is it's kinda hot when we climb up to the camp. be careful for the tick in the woods (not the camp), cause we found it on our dog.
