The Gibbon Conservation Center was established in 1976 by Alan Richard Mootnick and houses the rarest group of apes in the Western Hemisphere. It is the only institution in the world to house and breed all four genera of gibbon and has successfully reproduced 7 gibbon species. The center offers observation and non-invasive research opportunities for students and scientists and participates in all relevant Species Survival Plans (SSPs). In addition to providing consulting services to zoos, museums, government agencies such as the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and individual scientists on species identification and gibbon care, the GCC offers educational opportunities for students of all ages, as well as assisting with gibbon rescue programs in Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and Indonesia.

We absolutely loved our stay here! So special and fun to wake up to the gibbons singing! We were laughing all morning. Jodi, Gabi, and everyone who works at the center was so kind and helpful! The site was really spacious and we enjoyed hanging out around the fire. We even saw a few shooting stars! We did the public tour with Jodi in the morning which was so informative and interesting. Overall highly recommend a stay or just a visit to the center :)

Super fun camping spot with the lovely Gibbons surrounding you. Alma was very nice and everyone at the conservation center was very welcoming. Hearing those early morning gibbons sing was incredible. Also, the tour of the Gibbons Conservation center was awesome and informative! Will be back.

Nice suprise
This was our first experience using Hipcamp and we are definitely ready for more! Camping at the Gibbon Conservation Center was a great experience! We were allowed to pull our car onto the grounds too unload our gear and then shown the restroom and kitchen. Both were very well maintained and easily accessible from our camp site which was just up a little dirt hill. During our stay we didn't use the grill but it was offered and so was water and a nice lit sitting area. There was also firewood and a fire extinguisher for our use. You set up your tent with a view of a Gibbon enclosure! It was dark enough for views of many stars but light enough to feel safe. The 5:30am wake up call by the gibbons was expected but still suprising haha it was crazy but in the best way. We loved the 10am tour that was included with our stay. The host Alma was very passionate and very personable. I've already recommended this place to all of my friends. It's kind of a late check in (4pm) but we still had plenty of time to get our tent set up before sunset.. we also didn't have to check out until 2pm which is nice.

Truly unique camping experience. Kids loved cruising the conservatory grounds. Great utilities too - nice kitchen, full bathroom, a patio with chairs and propane grill, which were all super helpful for our stay (2 young kids, my wife, and me)

A very memorabl camping experience
We greatly enjoyed our stay! This location first came across our radar because we needed a place to stay near LAX but not necessarily in LA as we had our camper van for one last night. Santa Clarita is a nice small town with any accommodation you might need, although we only stopped at Whole Foods before making our way to the site. (Shopping, Six Flags, college campus, restaurants) The conservation is about 10 minutes away from the “town” of Sabra Clarita, so you definitely are out in nature! This is not a camp ground. We were so happy to have access to a bathroom, shower, gas grill and camp fire space. We shared these accommodations with some other (really fun) guests. The camp space is enough for 2 large tents on a flat small hill, separated by the fire pit. Since we didn’t have a tent, Alma and the hosts at the center kindly accommodated parking for our van very near the above listed accommodations. (Steps away only) What a special experience to get to spend time near these animals- we felt like we were as interesting to them as we were interested in them! The Am wake up call was a really cool experience. It also only lasted about 10 minutes then we kept sleeping. We had lots of passing contact with the employees of the conservation and they were all very kind. It’s clear that they are passionate about their work. We were sad to miss the 10am tour of the facility, but we had a flight to catch. I would stay here again and especially would recommend it for people wanting a different camping experience! Thank you Alma and our Aussie friends!
