Come escape to 30 acres of private river property! The campsites are nestled among groves of willows and cottonwoods offering partial shade and beautiful views of the nearby hills. Only a 5 minute walk to the river where a downstream beaver dam maintains a pool deep enough to paddle board or kayak in. Enjoy the sunset while exploring two short walking trails on the property (1.1 mi total), one through the forest and another along the river. The night sky is full of stars and really lets you feel disconnected from the world. The property is close to wineries, breweries, wine/distillery tasting rooms, restaurants, and the little Danish town Solvang. Or checkout other fun things to do in the vicinity like local festivals; hiking Nojoqui Falls, Gaviota Hot Springs Trail, Gaviota Wind Caves, and Knapp's Castle; catching waves at Gaviota Beach; biking local roads; fishing; boating, etc.
River Ranch Retreat offers dispersed primitive camping. Each campsite is provided a camp toilet, 5 gallons of potable water, emergency fire water, fire pit/shovel/ash bucket, and trash can. Firewood is available for $5. There are 6 sites, with one site requiring 4wd to access. Three of the campsites are a short walk (30 feet to 150 ft) from the parking space on the main 2wd road. They are tucked away, off the road to provide privacy and shade. Please let us know if you have an RV, campervan, or trailer so we can make sure the site will accommodate your vehicle. We can also host larger groups (>6) that need adjacent campsites, contact us for details.
Please check the weather forecasts for significant rain events and fire restrictions. If it is raining, we may have to cancel the reservation or offer a space outside the floodprone area due to safety concerns. We apologize for the inconvenience but during high flows and storms, vehicles can get stuck in the mud, campsites can flood, and strong river currents can be extremely dangerous. Also be aware of California fire conditions and restrictions. To help prevent wildfires, campfires are not allowed during Extreme and Very High fire danger levels as described by CALFire.
You will love the relaxed pace and beautiful rural setting. It's beats a crowded campground any day. The stars are amazing out here!

If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
This was our first time camping as a family and we had the best time! We were one of the first campers to book here at this site and Erin was extremely nice and accommodating to our needs. She did a ton for us, she helped us load and unload at our campsite, and made sure if we needed anything else she would bring it for us. Our family enjoyed kayaking and paddle boarding in the river, and also walking around the trails and exploring.
We will definitely be back. Erin, thank you so much again for allowing us to camp it was amazing.
I definitely would recommend River Ranch. The property is beautiful, our site felt private, and Erin was a kind and accommodating host. We enjoyed fishing and kayaking on the river. Also, CoVID safe precautions were in place. Would definitely come back!
Awesome place to stay and fish!
Erin’s campground was an awesome place to stay at! She’s very welcoming and considerate of your wants/needs. The river is awesome and has tons of trout, large mouth bass, and bluegill to fish for! I would definitely come back to visit!
Amazing river property campsite
This property was everything and more than we expected. The directions were clear and the host, Erin, met us at the gate and provided escort. We had a hiccup with our motorhome getting stuck in some sand and Erin shooed us off to check out the river while she handled the towing and motorhome staging completely. Our tree-shaded campsite was prepped with an accessoried fire pit, multiple water totes, a trash can, and a portable toilet pod. The trash can and toilet were emptied by the host as needed. We were forewarned that there was poison oak on the property, but it was trimmed where it needed to be and no one was affected. The walk to the river was about 5 minutes and completely doable for our group of 30 year olds (plus two small dogs) while carrying some chairs and coolers, but the path is rocky and unshaded. Our visit was during August, so the river itself was relatively shallow (shallowest areas were about 2 feet with the deepest area about 8 feet) and coated with algae in some areas, but that didn't stop us from enjoying the kayaks and paddle board provided by the host, as well as floating and swimming around with our dogs!
Overall, this property was lovely, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and we would recommend to others - though it was quite nice to have the property mostly to ourselves as pioneering hipcampers!
Erin was an amazing host and so accommodating to our entire group. It was our group's first time camping with our kids (a baby and toddler), and Erin made us feel welcome and comfortable. One of our tents broke upon arrival, and Erin quickly brought us a large, easy to set up tent to borrow - such a lifesaver! She provided plenty of drinking water and water for washing dishes, tables, and she even emptied out the camp toilet without us asking. The site was nice and private, and the river offered a refreshing break from the sunshine. Close enough to venture into town for a bite to eat or an adult beverage, or to drive your kids around in the A/C during nap time. :)
Definitely would return!
We had an amazing time! Erin was so welcoming and checked in to make sure we were comfortable, had enough water, etc. The site was extremely private which was great for us, and with so much space between sites we felt really safe being able to socially distance. There are kayaks and a paddle board to use in the river - highly recommend. And a few spots where you can try fishing, along with plenty of walking trails. There is so much to do on the property while having the convenience of your own private camp space and car nearby. Definitely take time to look at the stars at night. We’ll be back for sure!
Great weekend away
We had a fantastic experience at river ranch retreat. Our host, Erin, was very welcoming and provided us a map before showing us to our site. Our site was close to the river but 4x4 is required. Our stock 4x4’s had no trouble reaching the site. If you don’t have a capable vehicle, don’t worry because all the sites are an easy walking distance from the river. All the essentials you’d expect from a campground are available: water, trash can and even a private toilet. Erin checked in on us through the hipcamp app each day to make sure we didn’t need anything which was nice and she provided her phone number if we needed to reach her. 2 kayaks and 1 paddle board were available for us next to the river which were a lot of fun to use. The site is super close to Solvang and multiple wineries but we never wanted to leave the property during our stay. We will definitely be staying here again in the future.
