Hi, I am Susie and I have lived here on this Enchanted Ridge for 45 years.  I realized when we found this land that I would live here all my life.  It is now in a family trust and my intention is to make this park land a gift to the earth.  Its name when we arrived here was “Trails End.”  The 4 mile dirt road leading here was to the Vilas Lumber Mill, this ridge top land.  I was born and raised in the Oakland/Berkeley hills and was in alignment with the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley and San Francisco in the 1960’s. I could see the value in getting away from the corporate world and liked the slogan “Drop out of the Establishment and get back to the land."  When I moved here with my husband and 4 young children it was a dream come true...as funky as it was then.  To this day, each day here is another dream come true.  To own your land and grow your food can create real freedom.  There was Cohasset Country School here, an alternative free school in the 70’s, which led fundraising workshops and small gatherings to pay our teachers and weekly sauna days, potlucks and family reunions.  We have catered whole food organic meals for many workshops such as yoga, dance, tai chi, councils, board meetings and weddings. A sewing business, olive oil botanical making and summer cousins camp have also enjoyed this ridge top 26 acres.  There is a feeling of “home” here.  Many visitors comment on it being like what grandma's old place must have been.  My sister raised her children here and my son lives here too.  We all pitch in and share the responsibility of our water systems and land maintenance.  Over the years I have taken on many apprentices who wanted to learn some "living on the land” skills.  At this time I would like to attract some people with skills to help develop more self-reliance…and I always welcome a few folks interested in learning to GROW FOOD and garden. I spent this winter traveling through Ecuador and staying at hostels.  I am inspired now to open my land base and house to a broader group of people, as hostels do. We can help you create a reunion or welcome you to time of silence in nature, whether you want to relax quietly and experience solitude or celebrate and dance with friends.  Living on the land, in a simple way, has shown me bliss and I am here to share. Einstein said “Dive deep into Nature, and you will understand and be able to make things better.” You are invited to experience the brilliance of my bit of earth wonder. Call Susie for special wants and needs such as massage, yoga, dance, live music, catered meals and more. Learn more about this land: Our place is fun, easy and relaxing.  Campsites are primitive with water near.  We have a communal fire pit, basketball court, yoga studio, pond, pool and miles of hiking and mountain bike riding.  If arriving after 8pm there is a $10-20 fee to have someone greet you and take you to your site. (Make sure you have a flashlight), mosquito repellent and long sleeves (for dawn and dusk) and warm clothes for the cool mountain air. Please note: due to Covid there is no communal kitchen.

Schoolhouse Cabin
Bucket List: California Commune
This charming place has to be seen to be believed! We actually stayed in the main house, not the school house cabin, and it was so cozy and whimsical. The wood-fired sauna on the pond is a dream. The paths winding through the property truly are enchanting. The host, Susie, is a hoot with a fascinating life story. She's very warm, welcoming, and accommodating. This isn't some rental house furnished with Ikea and designed to be Instagrammable- it's a true commune. My friends and I had an unforgettable experience. Come with an open mind, relax, and enjoy.

We left! Did not even unpack!
The place was nothing like it was described! We booked entire Labor Day weekend for 30 people. I personally communicated with owner several times (both email and phone). It is all sounded so good! A paradise we thought we found for a few families with little kids. We were so excited, could not wait to get there! 3 families arrived first. After checking the place, we decided to leave! Just think about it! We called the rest of the people, set a meeting place in Chico and after some research went all the way to Shasta (we did not want to disappoint kids and go back home). That is how bad it was! Place was full of garbage in every corner. Some construction was going on right in the middle of the communal place with all the building materials scattered around. Some unfinished tepees with all the woods just standing there. Pool full of leaf and with poison oak right on the path to it! The outer house consisted two buckets! It was never explained to us when we made this reservation that 30 people will have two deal with their excrement using these two plastic buckets! And the cherry on the top – bear footprints around the pond. It was never communicated to us that there are bears there. Place was not ready for it (no bear boxes) and we did not bring any bear spray or anything. You must understand how serious this issue is if you have 4-5year old kids running around! The place was totally unsafe for the kids and adults!

This was our second time staying at Susan's property. Last year I celebrated my birthday there and this year I knew I wanted to celebrate it there again. Susan and her daughter were very responsive and accommodating, and the property is beautiful and unique

Peaceful and secluded
Enchanted Ridge was a lovely stay overall. The property is secluded and quiet, located about 4 miles down a dirt road. There are apple and plum trees, blackberry bushes, and a few wild gardens in varying degrees of attendance. There are little paths to walk throughout the property for exploring. As everyone else has mentioned, the mosquitos were unrelenting during their peak feeding times, in the mornings and evenings, which got old after a while. According to Susie, they are even worse in June/July. Going in August meant that there was hardly any water in the pond, which is just what you get in CA. There was a very pleasant pool and a "dunk tank" by the pond for refreshing dips. It was a relaxing trip and we were able to unwind in the peace and quiet of this place.

Enchanted Ridge
Susan was a really nice and solid host overall so it's hard not to recommend this location, however, it was more difficult to social distance than we had expected even though we asked about that beforehand. If you're not too concerned about social distancing, mosquitoes (there are many), and lack of onsite trails then this site is okay.
