Welcome to Hemet, California where you are surrounded by desert mountains, boulders, and a big open sky. Just a little over two hours from Los Angeles and about an hour and a half from San Diego heading east, we drove onto Jim and Dawn's Ecoshire. Our hosts have created an oasis nestled in the hills from the reclaimed land they acquired. The property is being used as an educational ground for permaculture practices and self-sustaining, eco-friendly structures. If you want to learn how to reuse water and provide your own solar energy, be sure to ask Jim as he can take you around the property and teach as you go.
We arrived as the sun went down and the full moon started to rise up. As you walk through part of the 35 acres of land, you may hear neighboring horses and cows. As the sun goes down, you will hear the owls and the resident coyotes in the night. Our site was cozy and nestled in front of a hill. The emphasis on community can be felt as the vision is well underway at the Ecoshire with communal buildings. You will find an old boxcar that is being restored with reclaimed materials. They have turned it into a beautiful bathroom with a well-lit shower. Rustic luxury in the desert, simple yet sustainable.
In the morning, we walked through the Peace Garden and ate our fresh picked snap peas and added new starts to the garden as well. The hens provided eggs for our morning scramble and everything from our breakfast was harvested on site. If you are lucky Jim and Dawn will share some of their delicious home-brewed mead with you! They plan on expanding their operation, as it is very environmentally friendly and will bring more honey bees to the land. If you want a desert oasis experience with a wild, wild west feel, AND get a bit of inspiration out of the whole thing be sure to visit the Ecoshire.
Fantastic and magical place to camp
I could not have had a more wonderful experience at Ecoshire! My boyfriend and I were lucky to be the only campers, so the generous host, Jim, let us pick any site we wanted.
His property is magical- a growing eco-friendly village that one day will be almost completely self-sustaining. The amenities were fantastic, we even got to pick fresh vegetables from their garden and fresh eggs from the chickens. Our campsite was perfect and the property was fun to explore. Jim graciously gave us a tour of the property and explained how it all works. It was fascinating to learn about and we can’t wait to be back!
The best pool in the desert!
It was 100 degree when we visited, I was a little worried at the beginning but when we got there, most of the camp site has good amount of shade. Their pool is well maintained and it will definitely cool you off big time! The box has everything you need from laundry machine, shower, flush toilet, and kitchen.
Not to mention, the sunset was beautiful and so does the night sky.
At the end I would like to thank Jim and his family for their hospitality. We enjoyed our stay and we will definitely visit again.
Great place-very welcoming hosts
Jim and his wife were great hosts! They were so welcoming upon arrival. They are creating an amazing eco-village on the property- we were able to get a tour the next morning from an artist who’s helping with the eco-village. It’s an awesome place in the making and we’re excited to go back and stay as they continue to create the eco-village. The campsite area was exactly as expected and perfect for an overnight stay. The bathroom is under construction (it’s an old train car that they’re transforming into a full bathroom) but the toilet was a real flushing toilet (which was amazing) and soon they’ll have a solar heated hot water shower and sink. They also have a really cute long haired dachshund :) We had a great experience.
Perfect stopover in eco garden
Jim and Dawn were very welcoming and kind. They even started a fire for us, we arrived in the evening. The place is beautiful and peaceful and I love that they are working on a completely sustainable setup. In the morning we got fresh eggs and vegetables from their organic garden for a yummy breakfast. We would totally recommend to go. We used it as a stop over between Joshua Tree and the coast but wine country is very close as well.
Beautiful area, awesome hosts, eco!
This was such a fun site! Not only were we surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, we also got to enjoy fresh eggs and veggies from their garden, and learn about the dozens of sustainability projects they are working on. Jim let us pick our favorite spot based on tree coverage and shade, and let us use a big table and fire pit. We drove to Temecula wineries within twenty minutes, and could get groceries in Hemet 15 minutes away. Definitely recommend!
What a great place they have here! So exciting the eco village Jim and Dawn are building. They are both so friendly and welcoming. We only stayed here one night but had a really nice stay! The site we had was private, with a picnic bench and fire pit (which Jim kindly lit for us), shower was also hot. The stars are amazing out here and the sunrise. Hope to come back one day!
The best of ecoshires hands down!
This experience was so touching to my husband and I for so many reasons. We are so grateful to have met everyone and to have new friends in Hemet. It was our first time visiting and will be coming back so often to see the place blossom. Thank u Dawn and Jim and the rest of the crew that helped to bring this precious piece of land into what it is now. You are a true blessing to this world. God bless!
Fantastic hosts / gorgeous land
We had a wonderful experience camping on Jim and Dawn’s property! They have an incredible vision for their land and it’s inspiring to witness. They are warm and welcoming hosts, who shared vegetables from their garden and a memorable time for our kids as they let them feed the chickens the next morning. There is a share bathhouse with shower and flush toilet on-site, and a kitchen sink and refrigerator. We recommend this site and we hope to be back in the future!
