We had a really wonderful retreat at Saskia’s cabin by the forest. She is very welcoming and we felt at home immediately. The weather was pretty cold, but Saskia was generous in helping us with the fire stove and everything else we needed. The woodsy neighborhood is very quiet and the forest is very alive. Saskia’s dogs are the sweetest.
The good- Saskia's property is only 5 minutes off of the main road in Forest Knolls, but feels like its own little forest kingdom. There are 3 cabins on the premise as well as the main house, which Saskia says in pre-covid times is a communal hostel. The setting and location was great for exploring Point Reyes and feeling like you are in the woods while only being 10 minutes from downtown fairfax.
The bad- Saskia runs the place like a hippy commune, which I would normally be fine with, but for the price ($150 a night) I was not expecting a dirty cabin (the person in the cabin before us left only a few hours before we got there and Saskia explained she didn't have time to clean, so there was dirt all over the floors), uncomfortable bed, and lack of basic necessities like towels and soap. I would have preferred just to camp. Now that the campsites are open in nearby Samuel P Taylor State Park, as of February 2020, I would not stay at this cabin again. The running water, shower, electricity, and bathroom were nice, but rather pay way less and just camp in the woods. Additionally there were also some communication issues with the booking and getting the address of the actual location from Saska, which made the whole trip a little more stressful than I have ever experienced before with hipcamp or airbnb.
