The vibe at Summit at Chanslor
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Chanslor Ranch is one of our favorite locations to get away. Summit is a breathtaking campsite! The steep uphill climb is well worthwhile, especially on a clear day. With sweeping views, distant waves crashing and miles of beautiful rolling hills, not to mention the always friendly hosts and dog-friendly setting, it's a place we'll definitely keep coming back to. Springtime is a great time to stay at Summit since the weather is fair and won't be too hot to hike in for people and dogs (and kids) the hills are green and lush, often covered with purple and yellow wildflowers. If you are lucky to get a clear night, make sure you try and stay near a full moon. You won't be needing your headlamps ;) .
We loved staying here! We lucked out with the weather and it wasn’t too windy so it was perfect. You can pay $10 for a bundle of firewood at the ranch and then walk it to the top (less than 2 miles) or pay $20 to have it and your stuff driven to the top. Highly reccomend bringing a rolling cart if you plan on bringing it up yourself! So worth it for amazing views and a relaxing space to yourself.
This is the most beautiful campsite I have ever been to in my life. 360 views, completely private. Highly recommend!
Some other good things to know:
- 2 mile hike-in so pack accordingly
- bring your own water
- if you arrive before 6pm you might have the option to pay a $20 porter to carry your gear/firewood up
- firewood bundles available for $10
Can't say enough good things about this incredible site. Will definitely be back.
The site was gorgeous, but I think 50% of the sites at Chanslor Ranch are nearly uninhabitable on windy days. This didn't see to be particularly windy, in my opinion, and died down once the sun set. But, with 18 mph winds, there was absolutely NO SHELTER at the summit. We moved our tent down the hill a bit, and were able to find some refuge, but couldn't use the fire or picnic table at all with the wind. I think this was generally the case for the mesa and teton rock sites as well. We met a lot of fellow campers along the trail trying to find spots with some more shelter. I want to be sure to mention this because I don't feel like a lot of other reviews speak to the wind, and while in general I found this to be a BEAUTIFUL spot and well kept location, I wouldn't come back unless I could be 100% sure about the weather.
Good hike up! So much fun once you get up there. Great for calm wind days. View is unbeatable. If you plan to do a wood fire, make sure to have a member of group has an empty back pack or heavy duty bag to bring it up.
