The vibe at Shelter Rock
A little windy the night we stayed but loved the site for a casual overnighter!
Really beautiful property! The ranch is easy to find and the person who checked us was very friendly. It's a short well marked walk to the campsite from there. The view is gorgeous if you get the opportunity to have a break in the fog! It gets a little windy but nothing too much to handle. Highly recommend the campsite! There are also some beautiful walks around the property to explore.

Chanslor Ranch is an incredibly picturesque place to camp! The staff is friendly and super helpful. Definitely check this place out if you're looking for rolling hills, views of the ocean, and horses trotting majestically across each sunrise.
This place is awesome. Tons of sprawling land and campsites to choose from.
Pros:
-beautiful views
-mostly private (except for some bothersome kids from another campsite)
-super helpful staff that offered to drive up our gear to the site
-we were allowed to have a campfire
Cons:
-very, very windy
-lots of cow poop and urine on the campsite itself
We'll definitely be back to Chanslor Ranch.
We had a great trip to the ranch. Shelter Rock is everything I hoped it would be. We were there on a Friday night in August and were the only ones camping in the upper section of the hill. There were about four more sites surrounding us within about 150 yards or more away from Shelter Rock which is in the middle of the other sites. Shelter rock is the largest rock formation of the group and was very helpful in keeping the ocean breeze in check. The hike from the parking area is about 20 minutes up and 10 coming back down. There is a well maintained porta potty with a hand washing sink at about the midway point. The trail is a full double track that is relatively flat on the first half and fairly steep loose shale on the second half. We brought wagons to haul our stuff which was good considering all the crap we hauled up there. Taking the wagons back down the steep section of trail was precarious and not recommend. My advice is to pack light and bring enough water.
The camp host was very friendly and helpful when we arrived. The roads around the ranch are unpaved so leave your Ferrari at home and bring the SUV. Camping in some of the lower sites were a lot less private than the hike in ones. The pond was nice to look at but access for fishing in it was difficult due to brush around the perimeter trail and the pond plants surrounding most of the basin. We never made it to Salmon Creek or the warm springs which are supposed to be bath water temp. They said you could rent a kayak or bring your own if you don't mind hiking it in. The upper part of the creek is supposed to be too shallow for boating but from the hot springs area of the ranch to the beach was deep enough to float around in according to the host.
Beautiful view. Camp staff were extremely helpful. The site itself can get get quite windy in the late afternoon., but usually calms down right before sunset. Our evenings were filled with stars. Definitely would recommend.

This campsite was beautiful. The Chanslor Ranch helpers will drive your stuff up to the campsite, but you will be taking your stuff down. You can buy wood ($1/log) and they'll drive that up there too. For this campsite, they have a make-shift fire-pit behind the rock and another pit plus a picnic table out in front of the rock. We felt it was too windy to go out in front of the rock, so we didn't have a picnic table (personal preference). The view was fantastic and it was very private (though there's no place to go the bathroom in privacy unless you walk down the hill to the toilets). We had a great time, and beware it gets very wet from the fog up there!

This place is amazing. The view is almost 200 degrees of the beach and the bay, and watching the sunset is magical. Be prepared to hike up a pretty steep hill up to the site from the parking lot, it’s a good 10 minute workout for sure. Make sure you bring enough water because having no running water at the site makes you conscious of your water consumption. Since it’s a ranch with camping sites, be prepared for mingling with some cows and highland cattle. They are pretty mellow and just focusing on eating. The staff is really nice and helpful and you will have a great time as long as you are prepared!
Nice hosts and spectacular view of the sunset over Salmon Creek and the Pacific!
