The vibe at Red Tail Point Camp

We ended up switching campsites and camped at Shelter Rock instead. This was a really good decision because the rock gave us some protection form the wind. Our night at Chanslor Ranch was a really great experience. The camp hosts were so helpful and the land owner even gave some of our gear a ride up to the site in his ATV. The view was stunning and there were wild irises growing all over the hills. Will definitely be coming back this summer :)
Two standout features of this campsite are the relative seclusion from other sites and the dramatic and beautiful views in every direction. If it happens to be windy, as it often is on the Sonoma coast, the site is quite exposed as other reviewers have noted, but we found that a robust campfire and a bottle of champagne completely negated the wind chill. It's only a third of a mile from where you park, so lugging in some luxuries is totally doable.
The Ranch staff were very open, helpful and friendly and management obviously cares about providing an exceptional camping experience. There are plenty of great hikes on the premises, including a trail that connects to South Salmon Creek beach. We didn't try any of the watercraft, but it would be great fun to SUP or kayak to the ocean.
Plus, a Redtail Hawk scoped out our campsite one morning, so the name is not some copywriter fiction! Two thumbs up!!
Spent one night camping at Red Tail Point. It is an easy half mile walk to the site with a pretty view out to the ocean and across the preserve and the Salmon Creek below. Lots of bird activity on the river below and in the air above. The site is very exposed to the elements but somewhat secluded. It has a pit toilet a few feet away which was very useful. And a nice big fire pit if you choose to carry in wood. No picnic table which was fine and made it a little more like backcountry camping. There was very heavy misting from the fog off the coast which was beautiful but annoyingly wet, but hey that's the chance you take camping on the coast. One big drawback during the day was the sound and dust from the Ranch staff's vehicles. A strange practice in a wildlife preserve. I think there were more campsites off in the hills that might have been a little quieter which I would have chosen first but this was all that was left. We still enjoyed our time here.
We loved camping at Red tail Point Camp! The location was beautiful and peaceful with great views of the ocean, mountains and Salmon Creek. There were at least two nice flat spots for tents, a fire pit and an outhouse close by. The campsite was just a 5 minute walk from the car on a well maintained dirt road. The staff at Chanslor Ranch was super friendly and helpful and gave us the great recommendation to hike around the property. We will definitely be back!
Red Tail Point campsite was great. The Chanselor Ranch has a nice setup. The property is right off 101 just north of Bodega Bay. Red Tail Point Camp is on a nice little hill overlooking the Salmon Creek and the ocean. There is water and bathrooms at the main check-in site, which makes for easy camping/cooking.
