The vibe at JT Highlander Tent Camp
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
JT Highlander Tent Camp has three campsites with tent platforms (a nice feature for a flat, level nights sleep), a flushing toilet, a working propane grill, a spicket for hand washing, an outdoor shower, a trough that can be filled with hose water to help beat the heat, and a great host! Site 1 has the most shade, Site 2 has the best views and medium shade, and Site 3 has the least shade, but nice views. Mike walked us around the camp for a tour and helped us make ourselves at home - he even gave us 4 fresh laid eggs from his hens! The campsite is in a residential area, really close to the entrance of Joshua Tree and the cute shops and restaurants of Joshua Tree town. There are hiking and mountain biking trails nearby, with abounding wildlife. We saw jackrabbits, a coyote, cotton tails, desert wrens, loads of quail, and of course Mike's hens and his neighbors two white horses. Since the horses are so close to the campsites, there is a "horse" smell and one of the horses likes to jingle it's metal gate through the night, so we recommend bringing some ear plugs for a better nights sleep. Mike has gas lamps at each of the campsites as well as fire pits for when the fire risk is low. We loved the proximity to the park, being able to go the bathroom in a flush toilet, and soaking in the tub!
Mike Kondra is a great host. He worked hard to accommodate us by creating a new campsite when his other sites were full. Super clean, if a but rustic, flush toilet bathroom as well as shower on property. His neighbors have horses that lend a subtle but farmlike scent which is subtle, not offputing. We were only there overnight so the fact that our site was full sun was not an issue. Mike's main sites are shaded.
We ABSOLUTELY loved camping here! It was a great little spot that had almost everything we needed (with the exception of a tent). I am excited to book another stay when the weather is a little bit cooler. Mike was an awesome host, there for us when we needed him, but didn't overstep and make us feel uncomfortable. He was extremely accommodating and answered all questions quickly. He even let our little pup come along for the adventure :) I would highly recommend getting there before sundown, the roads are bumpy and would probably be difficult to navigate at night if you're not familiar with the area. Campsite #1 has the most shade, campsite #2 has moderate shade, and campsite #3 is out in the open. The restrooms are clean and the shower is really nice too! There is a grill and a sink to wash your dishes. There is even a charging station for your phone :) I couldn't have wished for anything additional. (If you forget your lanterns or any other camping supplies, Mike probably has something for you to borrow)
This spot is amazing. Nestled away in a magical neighborhood just outside the park, with all the amenities you need to have a comfortable desert camping trip. Location is awesome, vibe is awesome, host is awesome, features are awesome. Having a flushing toilet and shower made this trip extra easy. Highly recommended.
This tent park is quiet, clean, pet friendly, and a ten minute drive to Joshua Tree National Park. It had all of the amenities and facilities one would need to make for a good camping weekend. There are trash, toilet, and shower facilities. At each site, there was a tent platform, table and chairs, firewood, a fire pit, and a small wood grill. In addition, for all campers to share there was a sink with dish soap and a towel, a gas grill, and a “charging station” for your electronics.
There are 3 camp sites, but Hipcamp doesn't allow to pick which site you specifically want so be aware of that when booking on here (other websites allow you to pick which site you'd prefer). Site 1 has the most shade, site 2 the next, and site 3 has no shade, but the best view.
My pups and I were in site 2. The host was very accommodating, checking in on us each morning and evening. Upon our arrival, he realized we needed a bit more shade to stay out of the heat wave and provided an awning for us to use. On our third day, a big storm was expected to come through and our host showed us a safe and dry place on his property that we could take shelter. Upon our departure, he even offered us a dozen eggs from his chickens.
Overall, this campsite was convenient and our host welcoming. And after this weekend, my husband and I will be booking a trip to come back!
We really enjoyed staying at JT Highlander. The owner is extremely nice and available for anything you may need. Free firewood. Loved having a table and chairs at each campsite, and the raised platform and provided mats made sleeping extra comfortable. Also, the outdoor bathroom/shower were surprisingly nice! Plenty of hot water was a big plus at the end of a sweaty day.
JT Highlander was great. Mike was a great host. The camp is well set up, nice bathroom and outdoor shower. Mike hooked us up with farm fresh eggs in the morning. Great location right outside the park, but away from town lights and very quiet.
