The Camp is a convenient, 10-acre, private basecamp for visiting Joshua Tree National Park, only 17 miles away, and is also only 8 miles from the world-famous Pappy & Harriet's, the ultimate music venue, cowboy bar and BBQ restaurant. The Camp is surrounded by undeveloped private and BLM land, with unlimited mountain biking and hiking on the surrounding dirt roads, as well as cross-country hiking to the top of nearby Black Lava Butte (now part of the new Sand to Snow National Monument) or surrounding BLM land.
Under a large, metal sun shelter mounted on a concrete pad, the Campground has two large park-grade picnic tables, a dedicated, heat-proof stove table for propane camping stoves such as Colemans or the larger Camp Chefs (please bring your own propane), utility table, Santa-Maria style charcoal grill that also has a lid so you can smoke food (please bring your own charcoal), cowboy bar (you have to see it to believe it), and stainless storage cabinet for food. Many tent sites are graded and there is a large parking area on the other side of the camp through a second gate. There is also ample room to park small pop-up tent trailers or other trailers. In addition, there is a 5,000 gallon water tank, ADA-sized porta-potty that is serviced weekly, permitted fire ring and beautiful rock formations and native flora and fauna all around. A landing strip for model airplanes has even been graded in the back of the property! The overall all feel is your own private National Park in the desert.

Camp Nylen was a DREAM! The campgrounds at Joshua Tree National Park were completely booked for the weekend- what a blessing! We decided to stay at Camp Nylen and will now be camping there every time we go to Joshua Tree. The camp site was secluded and included all the amenities one needs to make your camping experience as easy and wonderful as possible. I highly recommend Camp Nylen to anyone!
The positive experience with Camp Nylen begins the moment you start interacting with Greg. He is friendly and very helpful in understanding the amenities and directions to his property. The site itself looks as though you are in Joshua Tree National Park, only without the crowds. The site is very private and you will probably not see another person during your visit.
The shelter has a fantastic BBQ/Smoker and very sturdy picnic tables big enough to feed an army. Greg has done a wonderful job provisioning the site and making it comfortable while being out in the wilderness. Everything is sturdy with obvious thoughtful design consideration.
Lastly, the site has multiple level tent sites scattered around the property. They are folded into the geography. This allows a group of campers to be together, while also allowing some privacy and separation, if desired. All the amenities are in good shape and kept very clean. It was very enjoyable to stay at Camp Nylen and I look forward to the next visit.
Such a magical and private spot! Seriously, this place is absolutely perfect for larger groups and the setup is insane! Want to have an epic bbq? Well, there's a huge smoker for that! I couldn't think of anything I would add, except maybe an outdoor shower, but really...who needs that!? Greg was also very communicative and easy to deal with. Thank you!!
This was one of the most beautiful camps, I've ever stayed at. The fire pit was an absolute glory, the way it lit up the rocks behind us as we all hung out late into the night was out of a dream. We had such a lovely time wandering around the land---it almost felt like there was so need to go to the park at all. The benches were perfect for the large group of us to have dinner at--though we forgot coal and had to cook over the fire, but really that wasn't much of a loss. The campsites were well developed and very comfy to sleep on. Even the bathrooms were so so so clean. Though it was great for my large birthday crowd, I very much look forward to coming back with a smaller group some day and really soaking in the beauty of the campsite.
As a long time Joshua Tree camper, i'm not sure if i'll ever try and reserve at Black Rock or brave the first come first serve again now that we know about Camp Nylen. Secluded, amazing desert views, clean, awesome amenities - it greatly exceeded our expectations. Greg was super easy to get in touch with and accommodating. Can't wait to come back :)
PROS: A tranquil site, not too secluded nor too exposed. A large overhead hanger proved vital as shelter from the sun and rain. Plenty of chairs and tables. A nice smoker/grill for the aficionados. An out-house. A potable water tank on site, but we limited it to cleaning but not consumption. A colony of curious jack rabbits.
CONS: $150/night seems reasonable compared to the photos, but less so after going through booking and physically seeing the site. Surrounding private properties are limiting for hikes. Owners' extensive rules and instructions can be off-putting for a relaxing outing (e.g. hauling trash several miles to nearest town). Further disconcerting rules were imposed after booking, and just a few days before the date, regulating noise-levels during set hours of the night.
Camp Nylen was amazing! The layout is perfect and remote, but you have everything you need (toilet, hose water, fire pit, and shaded picnic area) to make camping awesome. The location looks like a setting in a movie and we were able to hike all day and drive to a near by bar to watch the Warrior's win game 7 :) **The only issue is there is no service after the main road and the signage for the property is very small on street signs and there is no sign for the actual property. We almost couldn't find it before sunset after a long days drive-- please add a sign to the front gate! Otherwise it was perfect--
We had such an incredible time at camp nylen! It's perfectly remote, while also being close enough to pinoeer town if you want to grab dinner or a drink. It was the absolute perfect setting and environment for a group looking to have some fun, while having a bit of shade and access to water. We had such an awesome time and are very much looking forward to camp nylen becoming a yearly occurrence.!
