Our working Highland Cattle ranch is in the Amador County foothills.  360 degree views include the Sierras, Coast Range, Sacramento city and Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.  Oak and pine forests at 1,400' to 1,900' elevation.  Creeks, springs and meadows in privacy, serenity and solitude.  We love to share it with people who crave it.  Miles of roads and trails.  40 wineries within 5 crow miles.  Gold Rush and Native California history.

Pretty and very private
I had a great stay at the hideaway. It's a pretty piece of land and is VERY private. I didn't see a single person from the moment I turned in to the private road, and it was very quiet. The very occasional distant car sound, but otherwise completely peaceful. The last part of the road in is very rough and a bit scary, but I made it in and out fine in my Honda Fit, which is a total city car.

The perfect secluded forest locatio
It was really cheap and actually the perfect secluded location. If you want to be completely in your own portion of a forest without anyone else around, it's perfect. That was exactly what I wanted so I really enjoyed it. Rick is also awesome, super welcoming and just a great host. Only thing is the drive up there is pretty bumpy when you get to the dirt road, just be careful if you have a really low riding car. My Honda Fit made it though

Based on previous reviews was excited to camp here for a few days but after arriving we decided to leave and find another place. First off we live in a rural, fire prone area of California so fire safety is always on my mind. The directions to the camp were very clear so we found it easily but know it is very remote and if there was some kind of emergency it could be difficult getting back to the main highway. If I had known how far back in it is I probably would not have booked it. Also, we have an AWD but I’m surprised no one has mentioned there are some spots on the gravel road I could easily see a passenger car not making it. Once we got to the site we were disappointed as there is a large building under construction at the parking area where the porta potty is. Lots of piles of lumber and equipment so not sure if there was going to be people working on it while we were camping? Also we have a toddler and it have been tough keeping her from all the construction materials. The site itself has views of the valley but to get to it you have to walk through A TON of cow patties. Again, we live in the country and are used to horses and cows but this was way too much to have at a camp site. There was a platform to put a tent on but it was small and our tent would not fit on it so we would’ve been pitching a tent in cow s**t. So I don’t personally recommend camping here but for some people it may work.

Rick’s hideaway is a great place if you are trying to camp in a secluded forest environment. This particular campsite has no facilities, but there are other camp sites with more amenities. There are many trails on the property for hiking and exploring. Rick is an exceptional host and will go above and beyond to make sure we were having a great time. I definitely plan on going back!

The campsite was nice and private, the view was excellent. There were cows roaming around freely throughout the day, which we found charming overall. They left us alone. It was pretty far from the big parks so I would recommend looking for things to do locally.
