Places to see near Ascension Ranch
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Roshan was a fabulous host and I would recommend the Ascension Ranch to anyone.
It is such a cute little horse farm with lovely sheets, goats, chicken and beautiful dogs. We were lucky and had the pleasure of playing with puppies. The campsite is located right next to a lake (walking distance) and it such a nice addition to the weekend.
On Sunday we went on 2 hour horse ride and it was so beautiful and relaxing.
Roshan and her husband were really nice and welcoming.
I would love to go back!!
Beautiful place, great for kids!
This is a great place to bring kids who are interested in animals, and can use some time outdoors in nature. Our son loved getting to feed the goats, track all the birds and insects on the ranch, and he really loved getting to ride Chief, the gentle white horse. The hosts were also great.
If you go in the dry season I'd prepare yourself for a lot of dust and heat and I highly recommend bring a shade tent for the lake and/or campsite. I'd also recommend sleeping away from the windmill, which can get noisy if the wind picks up at night.
Overall it's a really beautiful, if very rustic, place!
I had a great time at Ascension Ranch. Roshan is a welcoming host and I loved meeting all the animals.
There was plenty of room, I never felt crowded but was always welcome to come and pet the goats and say hi to their puppies. I especially liked that I was asked if I felt comfortable with horses in the pasture I was camping in (answer is an enthusiastic yes). A couple of times I was visited by a horse in the night and one morning I had horse company while making breakfast. What a treat!
Recommend for the camper who is an animal lover and wants some relaxing time on a lake.
This campsite was great. The most friendly and great family are running this ranch and truly appreciate them opening up their home to allow people to camp. There are horses and cows wondering around which is so great to see especially how friendly the animals are. They have their working dog also that will come up and say hello as he pleases. The campsite itself is well maintained with a great location to walk down to Folsom lake.
The perfect camping experience
We rarely wish to go to the same place twice, Ascension Ranch is the exception to that rule. We had a truly amazing time there with our two kids. Rolling hills, shade from the oak trees, all the animals you can ask for, a short walk to lake Folsom. This place has everything we could ever wish for, and more. We came home yesterday and are already planning when to go back.
Meadow view campsite - 10/10 would
Friendly greeting on arrival and great information whenever we needed from hosts. Isolated campsite in meadow with fire pit, picnic table, shady trees, and visiting horses. Good sites for tents, large picnic table thoughtfully placed to get shade during the day, 5 minute walk to secluded lakeshore (no jetty or pontoon, access for swimming was via rough track). We couldn't have a campfire the first night due to the fire danger, but managed a small one on night 2. Windmill adds ambience and makes a slight background noise - not intrusive at all. The horses were very friendly and occasionally needed to be shooed away, but that was part of the fun. Toilet is private porta-potty for our group - very clean. Lots of birds (we saw baby turkeys!) and occasional visits from camp dogs and cows in addition to the horses. 4 wheel drive vehicle helpful for getting down to the site which is down a gravel road and then dirt track but we could park right at the site.
Animal lovers dream!
From start to finish our experience was fantastic at Ascension Ranch!
Right away we were warmly greeted and welcomed by our host, adorable Wyatt, puppies, chickens, goats, and sheep. Pure bliss!
One note, when going through the green gate to get to this site, do be on the lookout for horses that are ready to go on an adventure outside the gate. They are really sweet and friendly, but also smarter than I was judging the space a horse needs to make a break for it. The hosts could not have been nicer about it, but it was still a rookie mistake by me!
The four campsites were spread apart and well thought out. We were fortunate that the weather was wonderful, but when it did get a little warmer you were able to find shade at the picnic table. We didn't hear much from our closest neighbors. The birds, animals, and windmill instead provided the nice ambient noise.
Bringing water was easy, so having no potable water for us was no big deal. Just a testament to planning for what you need to make yourself more comfortable. The personal portapotty bathroom was dropped off a very short walk from the site when we arrived. So, that was convenient.
Horses and cows made regular visits to say hello, which we loved. But, if you are uneasy around larger animals it might be a good idea to talk with the host. Personally, we had a great time and they were a part of the fun. There also are two lovely dogs that would come by to check on us and pause for a quick scratch before they were back on the job.
The proximity to the lake was ideal and you could easily find places to walk. There are trails that led you a few different directions, including the lake and state park. But, do note if you go off trail and the ground cover is dry, you are going to pick up lots of burrs and sticky grass. Our socks looked like hedgehogs. But, the defined paths were clear. To emphasize the animal piece of this part, on our walk we saw turkeys and turkey babies (poults - I googled this after our experience) and a jack rabbit.
Thank you to everyone at Ascension Ranch for an amazing time!
Amazing weekend on a private campsi
Spent a wonderful weekend with some friends at the Meadow campsite. We had complete privacy and were able to interact with all of the wonderful animals on the ranch. They even offer a beautiful horseback ride with a guide around the lake, it was so lovely.
Amazing beautiful peaceful perfect
Staying at the ranch was fantastic. The hosts are beautiful humans and their animals reflect that. The riding trails are awesome with miles to explore, and we even took our horses swimming for their first time. Can’t wait to go again. Thank you, Roshan and Jeff!
