Sonoran Skyline

1 site ¡ RV1 acre ¡ Tucson, AZ
We wanted to create a space for people to experience and fall in love with the Sonoran Desert like we did when we were living in our camper full-time traveling the West. Sonoran Skyline offers an escape to the beauty of the Sonoran Desert and the incredibly diverse flora and fauna that make this land so unique. We are in Picture Rocks West on the northwest side of Tucson, with Saguaro National Park Red Hills Visitor Center (West), Tucson Mountain Park, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and Old Tucson Studios all within minutes. Quiet, dirt roads, incredible skies, but easy access to everything Tucson has to offer! *Please read the entire listing - This spot is for campervans, slide-in truck campers, and c class RVs only. NO TENTS, TOWED VEHICLES OR TRAILERS OF ANY SIZE. NO CAR CAMPING. All units must have their own bathroom inside the camper!* You will park on the west side of our property on a large limestone gravel parking area where you will be surrounded by mature saguaros, established palo verdes, large mesquite trees, prickly pear, many different types of cholla, and so much more. Only campervans, slide-in truck campers, or class c RV units with a bathroom. We do live on the property and this is a rural neighborhood on the outskirts of Saguaro National Park West. No generators or fires (only propane). Let us know if you would like to rent our propane firepit and we can have it set up before you arrive. Learn more about the land: We are in a well-kept rural neighborhood on the west side of Tucson - which is the best of both worlds in our book. While this is a quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of Tucson, you will have cars go by from time to time so don’t expect complete remoteness! And yes, you can see our house and a couple of other houses. That being said, the sunsets are incredible and the wildlife out here is plentiful. There’s a good chance you will see anything from coyotes, javelinas, roadrunners and owls to quail, hawks, cardinals, snakes, lizards, rabbits, hummingbirds, and many of the other creatures we get to share the beautiful Sonoran Desert with. We are super close to the National Park (5 minutes) and minutes away from incredible hiking and never-ending views of saguaros and the surrounding Tucson Mountains, Gatest Pass, Ironwood National Monument and more. If you are looking for a safe, private place to park for all your exploring needs, Sonoran Skyline is it. Also a great place for any full-timers, as the service out here is good ( and we do have WiFi you can use). This is a dry camping spot, but we do have a water spigot and filter you can use if you'd like to fill up your tanks. Just let us know. Our property is a Certified Wildlife Habitat and we ask you to please be mindful and know you may see or encounter many different types of wildlife while here. Please be respectful and always watch your step! Because the property is not fully fenced in, we do not allow pets at this time. We do have three rescue dogs who you may hear from time to time, as well as a distant bark from other neighborhood hounds. Lucky guests may wake up to a neighborly ‘nay’ from Magic, the resident horse across the way. Please, no tobacco use. Why Sonoran Skyline? We loved it so much here that we stopped living in our camper so we could live in the Sonoran Desert and fabulous Tucson full-time. One of the first things we did was create a camp space so others could enjoy it like we do! We are continuing to add to and update the property and space, but we hope you enjoy your time at Sonoran Skyline. There are two Speedway gas stations, several great food trucks, and a general store all within a 2-minute drive if you need any necessities. Downtown Tucson is about a 27 minute drive and there are tons of wonderful restaurants, bars, markets and so on within the 20-25is minute drive into town.

The best camping near Picacho Peak State Park guide

Overview

About

Challenge yourself big time when you climb to the top and enjoy the prominent 1,500-foot peak of this state park. It's a tough climb, but you're tough, too, and there are cables to help you make it to the top.

As you wind up the peak, snapshots of the sea of wildflowers below and stopping to enjoy the view (and catch your breath!). Visitors traveling along I-10 have easy access to this outstanding desert park that has unique geological significance.

Stop at the visitor center to learn about the growth and historical importance of this region. Make sure you take plenty of water on your hike, as it's easy to become dehydrated in the desert. (And bring gloves for those cables.)

This park has 85 campsites available, all with electricity and available to RVs or tents. No water or sewer hookups, but here's a touch of luxury: High-speed Wi-Fi is available!

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book well in advance to secure your spot amid the popular camping seasons.
  • Consider visiting during the weekdays for better availability and a quieter experience.
  • Keep an eye on cancellation policies and check back regularly for newly available sites.
  • Explore nearby camping options to ensure you have a backup plan.

When to go

The best time to visit Picacho Peak State Park is from fall to spring, when the weather is cooler and the desert landscape is in full bloom. Summer visits are less ideal due to the extreme heat, which can exceed 100°F, making outdoor activities challenging.

Know before you go

  • Check weather conditions before your visit, as the park is subject to extreme temperatures.
  • Wear appropriate hiking gear, including sturdy shoes and sun protection.
  • Bring plenty of water, as hydration is crucial in the desert environment.
  • Be aware of wildlife and keep a safe distance from any animals you encounter.
  • Review the park's trail maps and plan your route in advance to maximize your visit.
