Enjoy 40 acres of beautiful mountain desert prairie on this private homestead. Vans, RVs, travel trailers and all other vehicles (any size!)... Drive your vehicle to your campsite and spread out with as much room as you need! The stargazing will blow you away as there is zero light pollution. Drive right up to your perfect site and use existing fire rings or build your own where you prefer! (If you're interested in the hike-in Tent Camping area or the Park and Snooze lot for quick overnight stays in your vehicle please see our other listings!)
Possible animals, plants, and crawlies you MAY rub elbows with (or at least spot from a distance): Elk, cows, coyotes, javelina pigs, bobcats, pack rats, pronghorn antelope, goats, prairie dogs, mountain lion, rattlesnakes, owls, ravens and hawks. Juniper, various cacti, rabbit brush, various beautiful flowers, "cowboy toilet paper," goathead thorns. Scorpions and various spiders and the usual suspects. Everything in its season, of course. :) DON'T LET THIS LIST SCARE YOU! Just keep an eye out and be responsible with your food and garbage, and keep your children and pets under your supervision and control...
Bring a flashlight for those nighttime trips to the restroom. It's a Porta John style restroom and it's much nicer than you'd expect. :) There are solar lights inside but you'll need a backup light for those times when it doesn't charge very well. With no electricity or lights throughout the property, walking around in the dead of night is like stumbling through inky blackness. So bring some reliable lighting with you!
Always check the weather at zip code 86320 before coming. We are open all year during any weather (excepting emergencies) so you are responsible for making sure the weather forecast is compatible with your camping expectations! Weather considerations: during windy days prepare to pay special attention to anchoring things like tents, tables, and shade canopies. When rain is in the forecast it can get very muddy out here very fast. So if you see that rain is a possibility, be prepared for that. :)
The campground host lives on the property on a small homestead. This is where you will check-in and where you can pick up water and firewood. Drinking water is available to purchase in gallon jugs. Firewood is also available for sale or you are welcome to cut up any of the fallen trees on the property for free. And don't be afraid to ask for help if you forgot something you need! Did you forget your propane water boiler? Did you leave behind your little charcoal grill? Did you suddenly realize you forgot to pack your flashlight? If you realize you're lacking some kind of essential then ask the host! There is a possibility he has something you can borrow while you're visiting! **Please be aware that there is NO trash pickup at this time for the campground so be prepared to pack out what you bring in. :) Any dumpsters you may see on your way in are privately owned by other people and are not for our use. :) ** Also The Spark is a private homestead - there are no hookups for RVs. This is a boondocking experience. :)
Available for rent RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP are 4-person pop-up tents with tarp footprints, 6 foot folding utility tables, and 10 x 10 feet shade canopies. Everything comes with extra long heavy duty ground stakes. Styles and availability are limited and vary from hour-to-hour throughout each day.
After checking in, the host will show you the access to the vehicle camping area. From there, just drive up the access road to find your perfect camping spot and enjoy the sun and the stars! There are no designated roads or paths in the camping area except the service road to move you throughout the area so "Choose Your Own Adventure!" Leave a note about your experience in our Guest Book while you're here, and thanks for choosing A Spark in the Dark Private Campground!

We really enjoyed our night at "A Spark in the Dark Campground." It was a gorgeous location and Clifford was soooooooo kind and welcoming. He has great energy and such positive vibes! He showed us where everything was right when we arrived and we bought some firewood. Our spot was perfect for enjoying the sunset and already had a great fire pit set up. We would definitely come back. It's only about an hour and a half drive to Sedona too!
This place was great! We were looking for a nice place to get away and this was it! To our surprise it was only a short 1.5hr drive to Sedona & the Grand Canyon. We spent our days adventuring and evenings making dinner, enjoying the campfire, watching the stars! This was a great “somewhat” primitive place to camp. I love the design your own site camp style. We choose to car camp and picked a spot on the far west side of the property which treated us with amazing sunsets!
Our stay at Spark in the Dark Campground was wonderful. Clifford was very helpful prior to arrival, and his directions made it really easy to find. The campground and toilet were well maintained, and we found a great site with a fire circle all set up, and lots of good kindling around. Gorgeous sunset, and the stargazing was incredible. Definitely recommend!
We only spent one night but could have easily done 2. The remote location is awesome. We were looking for a place for stargazing and The Spark delivered! With the near absence of light pollution, once it got dark my wife and I were in awe of the night sky! Shooting stars, countless number of satellites the beautiful Milky Way and billions of stars! If you spend time at your campsite we would recommend bringing some shade. We had some cover with us thankfully!
Vehicle camping at the spark was my first Hipcamp experience and im nervous that nobody could ever live up to Cliff. Getting there is a masterclass in detaching yourself from civilization. you go through gravel roads to bumpy dirt paths (that are completely safe for a sedan) until you finally get to the Spark in the Dark. If cityslickers are nervous about being out so far (read: i was) then Cliffords smile and generally laid back and welcoming attitude will put you at ease. When i met him he made sure to check if i was doing handshakes (corona) or if i wanted to greet in a different way. He gave us a run down and thanked us for bringing such a positive energy to his place (right back at ya bud). He showed us the new porta potty (bring a head lamp or a lantern its dark out there). Then we got to choose a camp site. there was enough room that 10 people could have been camping out there and you still wouldve felt completely private. We used the firewood he sold us $5 for a bunch that lasted all night and told us to feel free to use the deadwood on the property as kindling. The wood we used smelled so good i wish i couldve had a full fledged BBQ with it. The sunset was beautiful, the stars were incredible, the highway is slightly visable from the property to give you an anchor to civilization. and i can not stress enough how pleasant Cliff was. Like if they made a Jack Black teddy bear come to life. It was an incredible site and i will definitely be back again.
Clifford was a great host, and our stay at A Spark in the Dark Campground was awesome. This was our family's first attempt at camping, and it could not have been better. The site was very clean, we felt like we were the only ones out there, the stars were absolutely incredible, and Clifford was a very friendly and welcoming host. We all talked about how this was one of the greatest trips we've had. We will definitely be back.
This is an amazing place. We absolutely loved it. A very easy stop off 40, but felt worlds away. Clifford was warm and welcoming and offers a relaxed and beautiful environment. We had so much privacy and space, saw a gorgeous sunset, shooting stars, and the Milky Way. There are many small trees to provide shelter and shade. It felt wild and free. Just perfect.
