The vibe at Fish Camp 1
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We had no idea what to expect when we booked Fish Camp 1 other than it had a lake and it was in Alabama. But our host Doug was really easy to communicate with and we were more than a little excited to explore a new part of the south. Turns out it exceeded all of our expectations!
The directions were clear but just as a heads up, look for the sharp bend in the road and the green markers and reflectors as well as a green gate. That’s how you know you’ve found the site which is on your right. Pull on in and head to the right and go just a little further until you get to the camper. The driveway is actually two circles that form a figure 8. One loop takes you around to the camper, the other takes you around the lake. You can park or camp pretty much anywhere you like after that. Doug has about 40 acres of property so there’s a ton of space to choose from.
He allows guests to use the water either from the hose or in the camper he has on site. We used the kitchen for washing dishes and the bathroom for brushing our teeth. Just outside the camper, near the pond, is a huge fire pit Doug has made. He had a fire going for us when we arrived! We didn't fish this visit, but the pond if full of brim, bass, and crappie. Just throw a handful of cracker crumbs across the surface of the pond and watch the fish go wild!
Doug took us for a ride on his off road golf cart at dusk and we explored all the trails on his 40 acres. It is beautiful land out there! There is a large mowed area at the top of the hill that would also be incredible for camping, with a clear view to the night sky. We slept like babies, in the pitch dark - and other than a few gunshots in the distance just before bed (this is the country) the property was super quiet.
We can't recommend this place enough!
My boyfriend and I wanted a quick get-a-away, and Fish Camp ended up being an awesome place to stay for the night. Doug was very accommodating, giving us a tour of his land and making sure everything was set up for our stay. He has a lot of explorable and hike-able land, and you could really pitch a tent (or multiple tents) in a variety of places. We slept in our tent, but used the on-site camper to store food in the fridge, use the restroom, etc. The lake was beautiful and great for fishing, and Doug even keeps a two-person boat down there that we used.
Doug was very friendly and made sure that we were comfortable! All in all, we had a great time and would go back to Fish Camp.
