Overview

About

For those seeking an immersive experience in the historical outdoors, camping near Rosebud Battlefield State Park is an excellent opportunity to experience history in the great outdoors. This vast stretch of rolling prairie in eastern Montana, recognized as a National Historic Landmark, bears the scars and stories of a fierce conflict from yesteryears.

Here, on June 17, 1876, the Battle of Rosebud took place, a significant event leading up to the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn. Also known as “Where the Girl Saved Her Brother” among the Northern Cheyenne, this intense eight-hour clash is still studied by U.S. Armed Forces for insights into military strategy and the role of local terrain knowledge in combat situations.

Just a stone's throw from the battlefield is the Kobold Buffalo Jump, a cliff once utilized by Native Americans. Peppered with petroglyphs, this site adds a layer of mystery and ancient culture to your camping adventure. A brief hike will lead you right to these awe-inspiring marks, providing an intimate encounter with history.

For campers, history buffs, and explorers alike, a Rosebud Battlefield State Park camping trip is a chance to step back in time, experience untouched nature, and discover stories engraved in stone and soil. Make your way here to combine an appreciation for history with the allure of the great outdoors.

When to go

The best time to visit Rosebud Battlefield State Park is during the warmer months, from late spring to early fall, when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities. Winter can be harsh, with snow limiting access to trails and amenities.

Know before you go

  • Check for any special restrictions or closures before your visit, as conditions can change due to weather or conservation efforts.
  • Remember that the park is day-use only, so plan your activities between sunrise and sunset.
  • For your safety, be aware of the presence of rattlesnakes and adhere to the leash law for pets from April 1st until the opening day of upland game bird season.
  • Bring water and supplies, as the park is remote and undeveloped, with only vault toilets and picnic tables available.
  • Respect the sacredness of the site and the privacy of adjacent private lands, including the Crow Indian Reservation.
