Enchanting places to stay on an organic farm in Herefordshire

A treehouse, a canvas and timber lodge and a pair of encampments based around yurts make up the enchanting accommodation at Goytree Glamping. Each occupies a secluded spot in a far corner of an 18-acre organic farm where you will be left to your own devices. And speaking of devices, if there was ever a place to let the batteries run out on your mobile phone, it’s here where the natural surroundings provide the perfect antidote to the tech and tug of modern life.

There’s no WiFi and no plug sockets in the accommodation at Goytree and few, if any, straight lines. The yurts, of course, are fundamentally circular but even the timber in their latticework retains its natural wobble. The overall effect is charming and keeps each accommodation rooted in nature. A feeling that is, if anything, even greater at the Phoenix Treehouse, which is built around an old oak, and Bees Bower, where a spiral staircase winds around a tree trunk. Everywhere you look there’s another piece of craftsmanship making use of natural materials. It’s impossible to mention them all and nor would we want to as part of the fun is discovering them for yourself. What’s important to note, though, is that all of the accommodation is self-contained with its own equipped kitchen, toilet and (indoor or outdoor) shower, and each has either a roll-top bath or hot tub. There’s a log-burning stove for heat and solar energy for lights.

The fire, the canvas, the made-up beds, natural materials and semi-outdoor living all give the place the feel of a safari camp albeit one in the cooler environs of Herefordshire, rather than Botswana, which inspired the original owners. The wildlife may be different here but there’s plenty of it to see thanks to a commitment to sustainable agriculture on the farm. You may be content to watch bees and birds from your glamping hideaway or wander the meadows to find it but if you fancy your own adventure, The Skirrid makes a good destination. It’s the closest of the Black Mountains which form the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and it’s visible from site. A short drive takes you to the bottom, an hour’s walk to the 486-metre top. Handily there’s a mountain inn at its foot to reward the hike – and a hot tub or bath to soothe the muscles later.

Bees Bower
Perfect peaceful escape!
We loved spending our nights stargazing from the hot tub, sleeping above an oak tree and sipping our morning coffee overlooking the mountains. Such a lovely peaceful escape - we had a magical time!

Bees Bower
Bee Bower was the most amazing spot to have a break away from all the madness, and to get engaged!!! We had the most fabulous week there with our dog who loved running loose around the surrounding fields. With the most fantastic views from the balcony to waking up listening to the birds in the morning time, we had the best time ever. Thank you so much for such a unique experience, would HIGHLY recommend!

Experience rustic luxury at is best in one of our 4 unique spaces, hidden away on an 18 acre organic farm in Herefordshire. Nestled in the foothills of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park, this is a walkers paradise. Our accommodation provides a blend of mater craftsmanship, seclusion, off-grid living, digital detox with a good does of hot tubs, roll top copper baths, outdoor shower and more! Our dream has always been to create an inspiring place where people and wildlife thrive in a productive and enchanting setting. We feel so lucky to have found The Goytree, as we feel it can provide just that. Now we are here, we aspire to create a centre of excellence for sustainable agriculture which will help address the climate and ecological crises and offer a valuable resource for local communities and beyond. We want to create a thriving space which puts local food, conservation and connection to nature at its heart. Our vision is to champion regenerative agroecology, we will restore the organic status of the farm and the majority of the land will be used for nature positive food production which will supply both our onsite glamping business and local community. The remaining land will be enhanced for nature and eco-tourism through continued tree planting, maintaining wildflower meadows and rewilding. In future years we hope to move towards agri-educational and wellness retreats.  We hope that everyone who visits The Goytree will participate in a journey of exploration and have a unique experience which immerses them in nature, revives wellness, enhances understanding of ecological systems and inspires action on the climate and ecological emergency.
Nearby attractions

Goytree Glamping is just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park so there’s plenty of walking, climbing and mountain biking within easy reach. A popular walk is the hike up to the 486-metre peak of Skirrid, a foothill of The Black Mountains range which lies within the park. A good starting and finishing point is The Skirrid Mountain Inn (see below) and there are great views in all directions from the top. Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail also offers a good well-signposted walking route nearby. The lovely town of Hay-on-Wye, famous for its second-hand bookshops and literary festival, is 17 miles from site.

Food and drink

The Carpenters Arms is the nearest pub and is well-loved by all who visit. It’s been in landlady Vera’s family for 300 years and serves a menu of pub favourites. It’s three miles if you drive, but closer if you follow footpaths from site and walk. Rowlestone Farmhouse Ice Cream is another destination you can walk ot with the reward of ice cream fresh from the farm! And, in the same vein, a little further is Ty Gwyn Cider where you can try or buy local cider. The Bulls Head, at the foot of the Black Hill, in Craswall, about 10 miles away, is another pub recommended by your hosts. It’s a traditional drover’s inn with a sustainable, locally-sourced menu. The Skirrid Mountain Inn is good for a post-walk pint and bite to eat. It’s four miles from site at the foot of Skirrid.
