Proper camping where everyone is welcome in Somerset’s Mendip Hills

Ebborways Camping in the Somerset village of Priddy is a simple year-round campsite which keeps its campers happy. And how does a place with no showers, no WiFi, and no electricity do that? It’s simple; it’s upfront about what’s here and what’s not. And everything it does, it does well. It also doesn’t hurt that Chris, the host at this dog-friendly site, is simply lovely and that the site is well located in the Mendip Hills within five minutes' walk of a pub.

Camping at Ebborways definitely takes you back to basics but that’s one of the reasons people love it. Your phone will run out of charge, leaving more time to focus on the important things like keeping the campfire going, gazing at the view and, perhaps, striking out into the surrounding hills. You’ll have gathered by now that facilities are rather simple but, importantly, they are kept clean. It’s just compost loos and plenty of drinking water taps. Most of these are operated by a foot pedal. It’s an innovation we love and haven’t spotted elsewhere. For washing up, bring your own bowl or bucket. For a fire; use an off-ground fire pit. There are a few to borrow on site and logs are for sale—and that’s about the size of the place.

All types of campers are welcome: tents, campervans, and caravans. There’s no hard and fast rule on where to pitch but sensible guidance from Chris will point you to where you’ll fit in. In the summer, when the campsite extends over three fields, couples and solo campers occupy Field One, families are most at home in Field Two and groups are best off in Field Three. This, and a few sensible rules (like no music after 11pm), tends to keep everyone happy.

From here, you can walk straight into the surrounding Mendip Hills, which are full of ancient sites. There are the Bronze Age burial mounds of Priddy Nine Barrows and the wooded Ebbor Gorge, where Stone Age man once lived. Beyond it is the vastly more developed Wookey Hole with its underground limestone caverns. That’s less than three miles from site with other Somerset highlights: Cheddar Gorge, Wells and Glastonbury no more than 10 miles away.

Our 7-acre camping field can accommodate Tents, Caravans, and Camper Vans. We provide drinking water and composting toilets. There are NO set pitches, showers or electricity. THIS IS REAL CAMPING. Come and enjoy the stunning views, a campfire and a digital detox.

Ebborways Farm Camping
Nice basic campsite, had one night in tent with kids, not much phone/internet (a positive), nice grassy fields easy for tent pegs, enjoyed using the provided firepit in the evening (old tumble dryer cylinder!), can buy wood but we'd brought a few logs of our own. There is a sink with running water in the corner of the field that was used for brushing teeth. Was a bit worried about how my 3 kids aged 7-9 would react to the 'long drop' type toilets but they were fine after I explained you don't have to flush, all very clean; was glad of bringing multiple torches as the light wasn't coming on, although the torchlight made the largeish spiders in the cubicles look bigger (but they weren't moving so it was fine). In practice the checkout time was quite relaxed which was appreciated as the tent could dry out before packing. Had nice views of stars at night, sky was quite dark due to location. Lots of owls hooting in the early hours plus other wildlife scratching around, was great.

Perfect back to basics camping!
Welcoming reception at both the farm house and the onsite office. No problems with space as you can park where you like and no restrictions on pitch size. We are a family of 4 with a campervan, awning, bell tent and trailer and we had lots of room. This was exactly the kind of campsite we love, great rural setting, clean toilets, drinking water, wood for sale and a really nice local pub. We couldn’t have asked for more, it was perfect!

Wow! Fabulous site
Wow! What a great site. Right on the Mendip Way and a 5 minute walk to a lovely local. We (almost) had a field to ourselves. Clean compost loos. Book swap facility. If you want space and proper camping in a great location, this is the place. The stars! Check out the Wild Flower Walk - guide from the campsite reception.

Nearby attractions

Ebborways Camping is on the edge of the village of Priddy. It’s at its busiest on the second weekend of July when it’s one of the official campsites for the Priddy Folk Festival (it’s sensible to buy tickets for the festival in advance). The campsite is a great base for walking in the Mendip Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which includes Cheddar Gorge (six miles away) and Wookey Hole (less than three miles). In fact, if you like hiking, you could walk to either from here – but Wookey Hole is the more tempting with the West Mendip Way providing a good route to get there. The small city of Wells with its impressive cathedral and Bishop’s Palace, is just four miles away. Glastonbury, site of the legendary music festival, home to a bohemian high street, iconic tor and ruined abbey is 10 miles away. The Somerset coast at Weston-Super-Mare, Bath and Bristol are all around 40 minutes’ drive.

Food and drink

It’s a five-minute walk from Ebborways Camping to the Queen Victoria Inn, which is dog friendly, generally friendly and has a good menu of pub grub. At the other end of the village, about a mile away, there’s a cafe, Priddy Good Food, which does breakfasts and occasional Sunday roasts and pie nights. Further on, but still in the parish of Priddy, there's also The Hunter's Lodge (two miles) and The Castle of Comfort (four miles). If you want supplies for campsite cooking, head to Wells, four miles down the road, where there’s a good selection of independent shops and supermarkets. And, of course, don’t forget to pop to Cheddar for some authentic cave-aged cheese.
