Akehurst Lake Wilderness Resort

5 sites · Lodging6 acres · Clearwater, BC
A very remote, tranquil log cabin fishing camp hand-built in the 1960's. Akehurst Lake Wilderness Resort is only accessible by ATV (snowmobile in winter) or by foot (a 9-minute walk from the parking lot). There is no public access to the lake so it is wonderfully private & peaceful. We offer 5 cabins in total with some areas suitable for tents. There is a day-lodge with a kitchen and eating area for guest's use, kayaks, row boats, and a paddle board free for use as well as a wood-fired sauna! The lake is excellent for swimming. It is feet-friendly, shallow, and has no sudden drop-offs. And if you like to hike, fish or BOTH then this is the place for you. There are many nearby lakes that are a short drive/ride and hike away! Akehurst Lake does not have cell service or wifi. Lights are made possible by a gas generator in the evening. There is only cold running water in the day-lodge sink which is seasonal and depends on if the creek is running. Guests should be comfortable being in the woods and aware that if no one else is there, they will need to light the stove and fridge and operate the generator if needed. **Packing List** - Bedding (sheets & blankets or sleeping bag. Pillow covers) - Extra pillows (we provide 2 per cabin. Ask if more are available before arrival) - Towel/face cloth - Dish cloth & Dish towels - Paper towel/napkins - Toilet rolls - Lighter for fires (if applicable). Ours tend to all go missing or stop working - Flashlight - Drinking water - Cooler & ice You are welcome to create your own outdoor kitchen at your cabin, but we do ask you to be mindful of removing items from the day lodge that those using the kitchen might be counting on. ***We cannot stress this enough**: This is very remote. It is truly another world up there and we cannot be there at all times so it is a good idea to have some knowledge and experience in off-grid/backcountry living!

Beach camping near Clearwater with campfires guide

Overview

Situated in the beautiful expanse of British Columbia, Clearwater offers waterfront campsites that allow campers to settle into the area’s natural wonders. Wells Gray Provincial Park provides stunning waterfalls, numerous hiking trails, and kayaking opportunities on pristine lakes, while at Dutch Lake, campers can settle in for days of swimming, boating, and fishing accessible right outside the tent. For time in the rainforest, head out on a day trip to Blue River Safari, home to jet-boat adventures and wildlife encounters along the scenic Blue River.

Where to go

Wells Gray Provincial Park

Surrounded by serene landscapes and immense waterfalls, campers can immerse themselves in the beauty of Wells Gray Provincial Park. HIke to Helmcken Falls or Spahats Falls and marvel at the raw power of nature. Then explore Trophy Mountain and Moul Falls trails to see wildlife and waterfalls. Campers who are more inclined to water adventures can canoe or kayak on Clearwater Lake or Azure Lake. After a day in the park, settle into nearby cabins or campgrounds for tents and RVs with amenities like electrical hookups, clean facilities, and picnic areas.

Dutch Lake

Embark on a waterfront adventure and camp right beside Dutch Lake. The lake’s warm waters are spring fed, which makes swimming, kayaking, canoeing, or boating popular activities to do while there. Anglers will also enjoy fishing for various species such as rainbow trout and kokanee. With hiking trails that wind through nearby forests, campers can also spend time out of the water to spot local wildlife like the bald eagle. At the end of the day, head back to a lakeside campground to build a bonfire and enjoy amenities such as picnic tables, fire pits, toilets, and showers.

Blue River Safari

In the heart of the planet’s only inland temperate rainforest is Blue River Safari. Hop aboard a jet boat and cruise the pristine Blue River for the chance to encounter bears, eagles, and moose—all while expert guides provide insights into the area's ecology and history. Afterward, unwind at a nearby campground or private Hipcamp site, many of which offer a range of options including tent sites and RV campsites with hookups, plus amenities like picnic areas and private bathrooms.

When to go

Summers in Clearwater range from 20 to 30°C, making activities such as hiking, fishing, and canoeing very popular. Winters are chilly, with temperatures averaging around -5 to -10°C. Snowfall is common, which is great for campers who like winter sports, such as skiing and snowshoeing. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures and vibrant foliage as well as pleasant hiking conditions.
